  • New to detailing

Greetings from Jakarta. I am a newbie to the detailing world, had never detailed a car before. I wash my car every now and then, once - twice in a week. I had use the Meguiars NXT car wash previously but I switched to Meguiars ultimate wash and wax.

I am now trying to get the idea of detailing so I tried using the Ultimate Compound, applying it using a microfiber pad and a foam pad to wax. I hope the Cleaner Wax by Megs is good enough for a beginner like me.

Anyway after doing so I was quite satisfied with the results (considering i'm a beginner). My car's paint was clean, smooth and had no swirl marks. So the next day after commuting to work I washed my car (not using any soap cause i thought it'd strip off the wax protection) by hosing the dirt off and drying the surface using a chamois and a microfiber. I was surprised right after my wash I could see a very thin layer of swirls.

Any idea how this could happen? and any suggestion on how to prevent swirl marks? Thanks.

    Cheers.

    Re: New to detailing

Welcome to Meguiar's Online. The washing step is one of the most critical steps to get down right, techniques, accessories, etc., as modern clear coat paints are extremely scratch sensitive. There are many techniques you can take to lessen the chance of inflicting swirl marks or scratches during washing. Some of Meguiar's recommendations on washing can be highlighted in the following below link, Meguiar's Quik Tips Video Series - Washing 101.
In your case of just rinsing the car off using no soap or actual physical agitation, it is likely the dirt/dust was not fully removed, and when drying with the chamois you were rubbing the dirt right into the paint. This is another reason why we suggest using a microfiber drying towel like our Water Magnet, as if you ever were to miss a section during washing, when drying at least the microfiber material has some nap to it, to try to capture these contaminants, comparing to a chamois which is completely flat.

Welcome! Don't be afraid of the soap stripping the wax off your car. As long as you don't use dish soap you won't hurt anything. Use a dedicated car wash shampoo like the NXT, Ultimate Wash & Wax, Gold Class or Deep Crystal and you'll be fine.
