  • Texas 'old phart' rookie

Outside of Austin. Recently purchased rabbit pickup (from estate of former WWII Nazi; naturalized now) that has not had any exterior care for many years; and trying to learn so that I can find a kit to try and bring back 'some' of the color. Had sat in the hot Nevada desert sun for years; and exterior is in dire need of buffering.

    Thanks for letting me join.

    Welcome.

What year and color is it? Can you upload pictures? (Please post a new thread in Detailing 101 with the details and answers.)

      Re: Texas 'old phart' rookie

It is 'mostly' in the rabbit 'tan' color; with the previous owner, as an 'old phart' like me, using some spray cans to fill in apparently what he thought needed 'repainting'.
I'm not interested in doing showcase work ... but just enough to get rid of the dull look it presently has.
So far I have decided to the random orbital buffer to use; but will also (I think) need some 'stuff' (compound??) to bring back 'some' luster.

I tried to paste an image, but did not take.
      Thanks

I would suggest wash, clay, Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish then Ultimate Wax on a DA (Dual Action Polisher G110V2) with pads.

All available at your local auto parts store except you will need to mail order a DA and pads (unless your get the less expensive DA Power System for use with a drill).

Some pictures may help most if possible.

I'm trying to figure out how. Looking at the various 'How To' posts, and not found it as of this minute.

In our move from Nevada t0 Texas, I had to tape, with the wide clear tape one uses to seal a box, on the hood. In taking it off, it left a lot of the sticky stuff; will this buffer process remove that? I did not want to use something I was not sure would not remove some of the ... even though dull ... paint.

As you can see, former owner used a somewhat different tone of color. But once I get ... HOPEFULLY ... the whole unit treated, it may be A-OK with my expectation. I.m not in the SHOWCASE mode at my age now ... but have ... for decades now ... to get one of these diesel VW pickups ... and could not pass on this one. Interior is A-OK (IMO) but has some also hot sun cracks; floor and seats---95% of original condition; engine 159K gives me 52mpg; and just had it serviced for other needs......now runs like a top .... so want to 'strut' down main street now and then before I leave this world in the rapidly upcoming years.

Thanks........... again, want to use the buffer type I mentioned, and necessary 'gump' to at least let it be somewhat lookable.

I would consider something like T.R.I.X. for a pre-wash, and then the process above. I think what works on tar will work on tape residue.

Just do a small test spot though with the UC, and see how it turns out before doing everything at once.

Looks like it should be able to get a shine, if not completely even.

                    What does TRIX stand for???
I am a novice, as mentioned earlier.
Does it (TRIX) address the years of extremely hot sunburns it sustained day after day ?

The T.R.I.X is the product name.... made by Car Pro.

It is more for metal particles and tar (and i am thinking tape residue, though you could email them to be sure) that may be stuck to the paint.
