  • Hi - New to forum, love Meguiars products, but overwhelmed!

Hello from the Twin Cities, MN! Just wanted to intoduce myself. I've spent a great deal of time browsing the different topics on this forum the past few days. There is SO MUCH great info on here, but my head is spinning.

I take a great deal of pride maintaining and keeping my vehicles clean. My choice of product has always been Meguiars. A quick background, which leads me to hopefully getting some direction here: I just recently purchased a black truck (Chev Silverado) for personal and work use. My employer recently changed the co vehicle policy from providing me w/a co. truck to now me furnishing my own truck and them reimbursing me for business use. The catch here is, I'm in construction. I know I should have my head examined for purchasing a black truck and working in construction. But it was my choice, and I just love the results of a black vehicle when cleaned and maintained properly.

This has been my normal routine: Wash my vehicle, dry it w/an Absorber towel, then detail w/the Ultimate Quik Detailer. I would wax w/Meguairs Tech NXT 2.0 once or twice a year, but use the UQD after every wash.

So here's where I might need anyones help. Since reading different threads, I've already gone out and purchased the Clay Bar system, and am looking for a couple of grit guards for my wash pails. I'm about to buy the DA Power Tool (looks awesome). I already have the ultimate compound, and the ultimate polish. I've never been consistent in using those products due to inexperience, but mainly time constraints because I've been doing this by hand in years past. The surface is pretty smooth since the truck is new, but I'm already noticing those light "swirl" marks and a little contamination in the paint. So I'm thinking of going straight to the polish after I clay, then the wax; once the DA tool is in hand. So I apologize if I haven't found the proper threads, but could someone recommend or send me to the thread(s) where it talks about the proper care (washing, claying, compound, polish, wax, detailing) for black vehicles? Am I on the right path? This is my first new vehicle purchase, and I'm going to drive myself insane trying to keep this finish looking new, while working in the elements I'm exposed to everyday.

Also, is there a shelf life on the products? What about if some of these products (UQD, NXT liquid wax) were left in the garage over the winter and froze. Should I still be using them, or should they be replaced w/new?

Thanks in advance! I look forward to gaining more knowledge and learning tips on this great forum!

    to MOL!

This is a good thread to start with: Meguiar's 5-Step Paint Care Cycle

You pretty much are on the right track. For quick detailing (where you don't have much time and very light/fine swirls), I would do what you suggested like so:
    1. Wash
    2. Clay (if needed only)
    3. Ultimate Polish
    4. Wax

If you're seeing rather heavy swirl marks or you're not satisfied with how Ultimate Polish is improving your paint then I would suggest these steps:
    1. Wash
    2. Clay (if needed only)
    3. Ultimate Compound
    4. Ultimate Polish
    5. Wax

But please keep in mind that the process above will take longer now because of the added compounding step.

As for shelf life, I've heard the folks from Meguiar's say 3-5 years. But I've seen products last longer than that. Just don't make them go through extreme temperature cycles like being frozen or being heated during summer. Since your products are frozen, I will check the NXT wax or any polishes you might have if the product is separated. If it's separated, give it a good shake and see if it reconstitutes its old viscosity. If it does, you can probably use it again. If not, throw it away and get new ones. As for UQD, I would say it's still ok to use.

You should checkout the new ways to wash your vehicle. There's rinseless washing and waterless washing. Here are some threads about them:

I know you said that you're going to buy the DA Power System but here are some links to how to properly buff the car and how to apply a thin layer of wax. The principles and techniques should also apply to when you're using the DA Power System:

Something like a spray wax (Ult. Quick Wax or Gold Class Spray Wax) will offer better protection after washes, than just the UQD.

I already have the ultimate compound, and the ultimate polish. I've never been consistent in using those products due to inexperience, but mainly time constraints because I've been doing this by hand in years past.
Well, if the surface is in good shape, not many swirls/scratches ,etc, the UC would not be needed regularly anyway.

The surface is pretty smooth since the truck is new, but I'm already noticing those light "swirl" marks and a little contamination in the paint. So I'm thinking of going straight to the polish after I clay, then the wax; once the DA tool is in hand.
What sort of construction do you do? If you may see a lot of tar or metal dust, you may want to have something like the T.R.I.X product on hand also. Or if you are driving a lot and getting road tar in general.

The process is really the same for every color, that is why you havent seen anything black specific. Black just tends ot show things more if not done right.

As mentioned above, the compound is only if needed, two coats of wax is best, and then a spray wax after future washing.

Also, is there a shelf life on the products? What about if some of these products (UQD, NXT liquid wax) were left in the garage over the winter and froze. Should I still be using them, or should they be replaced w/new?
Well, freezing isnt great. If you can shake them up, and get a good consistent product coming out, then probably ok. If it has separated, and just liquid coming out, then probably done.

Ult. Wax is a step up in protection from Nxt 2.0 as well.

Oh yeah another thing I forgot to add. I would toss the absorber and buy Meguiar's Water Magnet to dry your vehicle.

Re: Hi - New to forum, love Meguiars products, but overwhelmed!

Just checking back in. Wow, thanks so much for the quick feedback, very much appreciated!

I'm in road construction; surveying and GPS machine control. So I'm around a lot of dust; ALOT of dust. I do my best to avoid the mud and major wear and tear scenerios, but cannot avoid it all of the time. I'm known for having the cleanest truck in the co. I do spend a lot of time on the road so yes, I'm subject to road tar, and any other daily contaminents. Not familiar with T.R.I.X, but will check it out. Ult Wax was also on my short list to purchase. I have Ult Quik Wax, but haven't used it in a while since I prefer the UQD, but I will use it more often now. I'm a little surprised at the water magnet recommendation since I've always used and been happy w/an Absorber, but I will will definitely get one. I think it's mainly cuz I've never seen them sold in the store (Wal-Mart, Fleet Farm, etc...) But I will try one of those too.

All the links and tips you have provided really have saved me time and put my mind at ease. I think I'm really going to like this forum. Thanks again!

Re: Hi - New to forum, love Meguiars products, but overwhelmed!

The UQW should be just as easy to use as the UQD.

The usual issue is applying to much.

I just give a light mist while doing my final drying wipe around.

You can also spray the UQW when drying your car.
This way you save a step and it's as affective. It usualy leaves the car spot-free.

I liked UQW so much that I now buy it in gallon as the Xpress Synthetic Spray wax from the detailer line.

Does Meguiar's have a waterless wash concentrate?

If not there is other options out there. If I was you I'd get a concentrate version. I use about 32oz give or take of waterless wash per waterless wash.

The concentrate version is 1:32(meaning one oz. concentrate to 32 oz of water.
                    I bought a a gallon for $45

It is 128 oz. so I have a bunch of waterless washes left. (Even gave 2 oz away) I calculated. My waterless washed cost me about $.50 cents.

If you want more info PM. The Meguiar's DA does look great though!

The Meguiars DA System is good, still owe Mike my review of it when I get a sunny weekend...

Meguiars makes the Rinseless Wash in the gallon sizes. Or just washing like normal...

Thanks Bill! And thanks again to all of you for providing such valuable information. I watched the video on the TRIX product, and I'm quite intriqued. To my surprise, the DA system I ordered online yesterday, was Fed Ex'd to me this morning! Didn't think I'd get it so fast. So I think I'm equipped with all the product and tools I need to get detailing. Do depending on weather and other activities going on this weekend, I'm going to try and use the DA tool. The wife's car needs major attention, so I'll start there first. I'll post pics (once I figure out how) when finished. Thanks again to you all!
