  • License Plate Sticker removal

I would like to ask Barry MeGuire if it is not already on the Market, to come up with a product that the State License Plate/Personalized Plates year sticker can be easily removed with out damaging the paint on the license plate, every year I go thru the same thing, trying to use a razor blade and scratching the paint badly, or this year I used Goof Off which says it removes stickers, but alas it took the paint off and ran down onto one of the letters on my personalized plate and ruined it, I asked NV DMV if they knew of anything avialable to remove the stickers and their answer was NO. Come on Barry, come up with some thing, I am sure there are Car People all over the World that have this problem also. I have even tryed using a hair dryer to peel the sticker off, it also does not work, tryied soaking it in the sink in Hot Water, that also does not work. I am very detailed with my vehicles and will not stack the stickers on top of each other......WHAT IS THE ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use an X-Acto blade...no, not the one that looks like a scalpel blade, the one that is like a tiny chisel (#17).

I honed it down to a finer angle, and just GENTLY get under an edge and scrape it off. After the foil part is removed, use a solvent on a rag, towel or whatever and remove the glue residue.

    Make sense?

Bill, kinda makes sense, someone even suggested using PLASTIC RAZOR BLADES, personally I have never heard of Plastic Razor Blades, I go thru this Doo Doo every year, and have never been successful in removing the stickers, I assume in MN they use the same renewal year stickers the same as they do in Nevada. I would think it would be no big problem for Barry MeGuires Engineers to come up with a safe to use product to remove the stickers without causing damage to the License Plate, This year I attempted to use Goof Off, which states that is removes stickers, decals. etc. in the square valley at the top right of the license plate where the yearly sticker goes, I decided to put a small amount of the Goof Off and let it soak, WRONG, it not only took the paint from that erea off, it also ran down on one of the letters on my personalized plate which is 1969USA and took most of the A off, ruining the plate, so Nevada DMV was nice enough to have another set made for $11.00.........I have currently 5 vehicles and go thru this on each of them every year, I think it ***** There has got to be a product some where that will safely remove the stickers You are the first to suggest your method, all other suggestions I have tryed and were not successful............Wonder if Barry MeGuire even reads the comments!!!!!!!! If so no one from MeGuires has responded to me what so ever............You ever see a Guy who smiles all the time like Barry!!!!!

        Max,

I hear ya, but I think ALL of the DMV's use a sticker that is made difficult to remove as some low life can't just peel one off and use it. Also those year stickers are essentially a metal coating with glue on the back.

Goof Off is pretty 'hot', in fact I'd say it is REAL HOT. Anything that will remove dried old latex paint ain't a gentle product.

I use a much simpler and faster method. I send a replacement form in to the State DOT and ask for a replacement plate. Normal plates cost $2.00 and specialized plates cost $6.00. I now replace the plates on my daily driver rather than waste time trying to remove the old stickers. So much faster and if you're playing with razor blades, probably safer too. Check with your state DOT for their plate replacement procedure. For me $2.00 makes this just not worth my time.
