  • Man it's cold out here

    Hi guys,

I'm from Markham, ON a small town near Toronto and I have just got into the detailing craze, because I'm a huge gear head but I find that doing electronic and mechanical mods while fun are very expensive so I think my call sign is fact "detailing enthusiasts" .

I started last summer with basic cheapo car shampoo and Armour-all quick wet wax which was the cleanest I have ever got on my Mom's 2010 Accord. The paint is in pretty good condition so this summer I don't think I going to change anything in the routine except for adding a mild clay process and mild hand polish (trying to stay off the DA for now). Last year I bought Meg's Gold Class liquid wax thinking I would use the armour all of my dad's van and the Meg's on my mom car since it was the best car we have but never got around to opening the box (hope it doesn't expire).

Now that I have my first job at a retailer that actually sells enthusiasts detailing prodcuts. I think I'm going to try Meg's high end enthusiasts line-up and Autoglym's line up, and see which one works better for me.

I don't want to start a huge discussion here but how would you guys recommend me washing my mom's car in -7 deg Celsius weather with no heated garage because going to gas station to a weekly wash is expensive and hard on the paint.

      Welcome to MOL!

As for the wash, , that is COLD! How filthy is the car?

If it isn't too bad, your best bet in this case might be to fill a bucket with really warm water from the shower and do a rinse-less wash method inside of the garage.

But if the car is really filthy, coated in show/grime etc, that might not be a good idea. We need a few more details.

Well it's quite dirty, think of this, every time it snows they spray de-ice fuild, un-filtered salt and sand on the roads and because of the shortage of mud flaps if you drive behind someone that gets sprayed over the car and also when the snow melts huge puddles of filthy water ride up on your car (it's a detailer's nightmare) but I guess all I need is the right water beading that won't be a big problem for me.

I feel your pain. I got lucky and was able to rent some heated space. Before that I had screw lids on my buckets and I'd fill them with hot water and Gold Class or Ultimate Wash and Wax soap. Go to the car wash and high pressure rinse the car, hand wash, rinse, then dry. Even then the car washes start shutting down when it gets so cold, unless you can find one with heated bays and allows bucket washing. Yep it eats the money!!

Many people on the list use a no-rinse product to wash. Search the forum for "ONR". Perhaps this will help you out.

-7 seems way to cold for washing, for me at least, I tried an onr wash when it was in the teens and by the time I would start to dry the panel of the sheets o fwater were already frozen due to the body panels temps, I just try to weather out the winter and use a touchless car wash when possible. I your up to trying a rinsless wash, go for it maybe it'll work good for you. Stay Warm.
