finally have 2 vehicles that I really care about and need to know if there is a starter kit one can purchase to get started on the right foot?

No kit by hand, but only a few products are needed for the paint. Of course if you want wheels, tires, glass, interior, you start to add more.

1. Wash - Gold Class soap, 2 buckets, Grit Guards if possible, quality towels/sponges.
2. Clay - Smooth Surface Clay kit, extra bottle of Quick Detailer.
3. ColorX
4. Wax - Nxt 2.0

And some foam applicators for the products.

There are a couple kits for machine use, but still may do better seperately.

rookie questions I dont know what grit guards are or a clay kit,colorX and I would be assuming the Nxt2.0 is a meguiar's part number.I have city water so its hard and having 2 black vehicles I cant get them dryed fast enough to keep it from spotting,and the windshield drives me crazy.

Hope these explanations help.
Grit guards are placed in the bottom of both buckets. They keep the grit at the bottom of the bucket. This way the grit does not reappear on your wash mitt. Then you do not induce new scratches, in the next area you are washing.

Smooth surface clay kit. Comes with a bottle of quik detailer, a supreme shine microfiber, and a small bottle of cleaner wax.
You divide the clay bar into a couple of pieces, spray the qd on a 2"x2" section. Rub the clay over the lubed area. wipe section dry with the microfiber. Before you start a new section, knead the clay so it is clean. Repeat the steps.

Color-x is a little bit stronger then cleaner wax. It is a great product.

NXT 2.0 is the new version of nxt. It is the longest lasting sealant Meguiar's makes.

I found a couple "kits" on amazon.com for VERY reasonable prices to get you started.

This will get you a wash and wax just to get the car clean and protected.

This one includes the Smooth Surface clay kit and seems to be a much more "complete" package.

Obviously, you may not use all of the products in the "kit" but it will certainly help you get a variety of things quickly just to get you started making your car look the way you want it!

ColorX is a mild/medium strength cleaner/wax, so it covers the cleaning, polishing, and waxing steps.

You mentioned word sealant here .. sealant & wax are the same, correct?

Megiuar's uses the terms inter-changeably. Nxt Tech Wax is a purely synthetic product, which some companies/detailers would call a sealant.
