  • working with marine fiberglass

I've finally had it with "shade tree" boat detailers who do lousy work.

I understand Meguiars 1-2-3 step process for conditioning the gel coat, sealing the gel coat with a polish, and finally protecting the polish barrier with "sacrificial wax".

Here's my question: what type of buffer pads do I use during the 1-2-3 step process including application and removal (these should be different pads right?)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of machine will you be using?

How bad is the surface/damage that you will be working on?

Your not going to want to use the Deep Crystal System on a fiberglass boat.

Thanks for the replies! I'm using three different machines, 1) a 10" orbital buffer, 2) a Milwaukee Tools variable-speed drill-motor (buffer) and 3) a 4" angle grinder (buffer).

I know there are different uses for wool pads vs. soft pads.

Yesterday I heard from the mechanic who had worked on the outdrives that the "detail" man had used sandpaper on the gel coat! This for only a light level of oxidation!
