  • I Need help!!

OK Hi to all and thanks in advance if you take the time to help some one who needs it!
I have been selling cars for over 20 years and in the last year built a garage got all the gear to spray and do a "nice" job...now again but problem is this> I just started doing custom cars and need a wet look laquer finish shine but when I do it I get alot of scratches. I paint and laquer the car as normal, leave it 24 hours and wet flat it and to this point all is good but then when I mop it up using G3 through to g10 sponge electric mop slow speed & lots of water but by the time I get to gloss shine it is full of scratches that were not there when laquered and not there on the wet flatting......................?? please help if you have any ideas what i'm doing wrong

    Thanks CJ

      Re: I Need help!!

No not from sanding, at the sanding stage im left with a lovely smooooth mat finish, i try to buff the laquer back up using a good micro sponge mop head g3-g10 & lots of water but by the time im back up to a shine its full of scratches and dont get it? I put about 2.5 hours per panel wet flatting and 2.5 hours mopping it back up, is there a time im ment to leave it between wet flatting to mopping up?

Again, need to understand / see these "scratches" to better understand your situation. it could be many factors or a single factor that is contributing to your results.... We hate to guess and steer you in the wrong direction.

In addition, what is the suggested timing for curing / sanding / polishing etc. by the paint Mfg ?

Just curious, what grit have you sanded with ?

            Re: I Need help!!

            Hello,

            First off, welcome to MOL!

Secondly, I hate to say it but we had to delete your avatar as it violates our terms of service and we don't feel it's in keeping with our family friendly atmosphere. We appreciate your understanding.

Now then, there seems to be a bit of a language issue going on with your posts - yes, we Yanks have pretty well torn up the Queen's English and it sometimes makes it a bit difficult to follow when you Brits use very colloquial terms. Can you tell me what exactly you mean by "mop it up using G3 through to g10 sponge electric mop slow speed & lots of water"?

Traditionally, following the wet sanding steps to flatten the paint you next use a wool cutting pad on a rotary buffer with a quality compound to pull out the sanding marks and bring the shine back to the paint. But there is no water involved in this step and it usually requires a fairly high speed. But your reference to "G3 through to G10" is really throwing us. Surely one of our British members (oh Kicking Griffin, where are you????) will immediately understand, but I'm sure several MOL members are sort of scratching their heads at the moment.

We are definitely here to help you out, we just need to make sure we're all talking about the same processes!!
