  • Clearcoat question

I was told that you should not wax a car with clearcoat because it makes it necessary to continue waxing since you have breached the clearcoat and made it wax dependent. This does not seem logical to me. What is the Truth

    Re: Clearcoat question

Paint is paint and can be treated the same. Clear Coat is just paint with no pigment. So if you want paint to hold up to the elements, it is best to keep it clean, have polishing oils to keep it moist, and wax to act as a sacrificial barrier to the elements.

      Re: Clearcoat question

Wax doesn't remove the clear coat, is serves as a sacrificial barrier so contaminants won't damage it.

It's better to have this barrier that you can re-apply easily in minutes than going to a paint shop to apply clear coat or just have it repainted.

No true at all. Wax does not breach the clear coat at all. It just sits in a microscopic layer on top of it.

          Very illogical.

Bad things will happen if you don't wax your car.

I understand were your coming from. Back in 1993 or early 1994 I bought a New Buick. The salesman told me " that this car comes with clearcoat. You never have to wax it."

I was skeptical about this. Waxed like I use to before I joined Meguiars. But there is always a lot of misinformation out there.
