  • My name is Calais...

... and I am a car nut. I am the proud owner of a 1979 Cutlass Calais. Most people my age not interested in a car like mine, but I love it.

When I got the car, the paint was pretty badly oxidized as well as extremely scratched, chipped and swirled. I have taken care of the oxidation and I'm working on the swirls, but not much can be done for the chips. I intend to have the paint on my hood, nose and front panel restored.

I take insanely good care of my car and everyone around me that is not a car guy thinks I am out of mind. What can I say? Maybe I am.

Any other pictures of the car? I'm interested in the oxidation reduction you completed.

I don't have very many before pictures, but I have a few more afters if you are interested. I have a few pictures of the horribly cracked and oxidized original Landau top the car came with (before I replaced it), it may have some pictures of the paint in it...

My friend has the same car, only a 1994. Its nice to see another Olds-man like myself. My only gripe with the newer generations is that they didn't have the rocket logo, I loved it.

                      Thank you kindly.

Keep on detailing calais. The truth of the matter is your neighbours no nothing about car care and they're probably a bit peeved that their wheels are not as cool as yours!

I know my ride is cooler than theirs. My Nissan driving neighbors look at me weird when I'm outside waxing my car at 11:30 at night but little do they know if they brought their '08s and '09s to any car show they would get laughed at.

You're absolutely right! i'm not going to bash makes of cars here, though.

                            i wash my car whenever i can,average would be 2 or 3 times a week.plus detailing inbetween.most neighbours are quite complimentary,but some aren't(not actually rude,though).

Sometimes when i wash my car(which is 15 years old),my neighbour jumps into his 1 year old car, which also costs 3 X's the amount, and goes to the nearest car wash and returns in 10 minutes,as if to say 'hey look, mine's is clean and it only took 10 mins!' They just don't get it? "DOH!"

I actually get a kick out of it! It's funny! thing is his car actually looks more or less the same with dirt still on the lower parts.I would NEVER put my car through an auto wash.

                            Cheers,Eddie....

I'm not bashing makes, I simply am not a huge fan of most imports. I was actually trying to make a point that newer cars will not be well received at the car shows I frequent.

Most of my neighbors make a complimentary remark about how nice my car looks and how "shiny" it and then make a passing remark about how car crazy I am and that I will rub off the paint. It's like a game at this point.

My neighbors all do the auto wash, needless to say my block is swirl-mark central. My car included simple because of the previous owner (and the fact that the car is 30 years old). Some are pretty deep and some areas of the paint are not ready for heavy compounding, but I'm working on it.

Everytime I see a neighbor pull into his driveway and peak at his tell-tale super greasy dashboard I know the car has been washed with broom and slathered in Armorall.
