  • Detailing delima

I have a 2008 Cherry Red Roush Mustang & the detailer where I bought it made a mess of it. It now has swirls & marks in it. I used the clay bar & than polished & waxed, but some of these marks are still there. Anybody know if I can go back & use Scratch X on it & start over?

    Re: Detailing delima

i had the same problem on my 2009 murano..... it had less swirls when i first saw it on the lot than after they "detailed" it..... and theres nothing you can do but fix it yourself... and remind yourself that next time you buy a new car.... tell them not to detail it

anyways.... yah just wash your car and scratch X one panel at a time..... then when you dont see anymore swirls, polish and wax it and move onto the next panel..... remember to use lots of pressure and just scrub the swirls away....

lucky for me i bought a G100 and 80 made short work of all the DISO and now the car looks a lot better than when i first saw it brand new on the lot....

Yes you can go and use ScratchX one those spots again.
Maybe you'll have better results this time because you'll focus on one spot (defects) instead of an entire panel

Remember to wax when you're done

What's with these Detailer hack jobs? Sorry to hear about that. I agree with Yalerd and benhui86. Looks like you've removed some of the lighter swirls and are now seeing the deeper ones and like yalerd said you can now focus on those and eventually get it back to how it should be. Let us know how it turns out.

If ScratchX doesn't do it and you're not ready to buy a G100/PC try Meguiar's #105 Ultra Cut Compound by hand with a yellow foam applicator pad. From what I've seen ...others here have gotten great results.

The fastest and easiest way to undo the damage would be to get a quart of M105 Ultra Cut Compound and use this to remove the swirls and scratches if you want to work by hand. It's faster and more effective than ScratchX.

It's even faster and more efficient to invest in a G110 and learn to machine clean and polish yourself than to work by hand because most clear coat paints are pretty hard as compared to traditional single stage paints and that makes it more difficult for you and I to remove swirls and scratches by hand. Thus the reason the DA Polisher like our G110 has become so popular with enthusiasts for the last 15+ years or so...

You can also use ScratchX but it will usually take more applications and more rubbing to get the same results as one application of M105 as we now show this difference in all our Saturday Classes.

When you do work on your car by hand, only work small sections at a time, about a foot squared or so and after you finish one section move on to the next section and be sure to overlap a little into the previous section for uniform material removal. (UMR)

After this step, (we call the the cleaning step), you'll then want to polish using a pure polish like

              Deep Crystal Polish
              M07 Show Car Glaze
              M81 Hand Polish

All three are pure polishes and will maximize the gloss and clarity of your car's paint.

Then after that you'll want to apply a coat of wax like NXT Tech Wax.

It's so much work to undo swirls instilled by hack detailers... sorry this happened to you and your very nice Mustang.
