Hi.

What ever happen to the good old cotton baby dippers. That is all I use when I wax. But every thing I read is about the microfiber towel? What is wrong with 100% cotton dippers that my dad and his dad used for years?

Welcome aboard!

I used to use diapers also, but that was long ago when I first started detailing. Once I tried my first quality microfiber towel I was hooked.
Try it, and you'll like it.

Diapers and T-shirts, (another common popular cloth from the old days to wipe wax off), both have what's called a "Flat Sheen", this means limited ability to hold removed product and no cushion. Because the surface is flat it's less able to gently break up continuous layer of product like a coating of wax.

Meguiar's recommends either microfiber or 100% cotton terry cloth as these type of polishing cloths have a nap and the nap provides more cushion to spread out the pressure of your hand, it provides more surface area to hold removed product, it helps to gently break up and remove a continuous layer of product and it provides a little more safety in-case anything abrasive ever enters into the wipe-off process by giving a dirt or abrasive particle a place to bury into versus getting trapped between the surface of the paint and the flat sheen of a diaper or t-shirt.

As the name implies, microfiber polishing cloths are made from microscopic in size fibers which can better get into the small surface imperfection of the paint to remove product from the surface.

That's off the top of my head... there's more benefits to microfiber polishing cloths and 100% cotton terry cloth as compared to anything with a flat sheen like a diaper, a t-shirt or even flannel cloth.

I might have tried the wrong type? The one I used was a tan color very thin. I did not like it at all. I do use a Microfiber for all the glass and I do like that. I never tried one of them thinking it would mark the truck?

There are different kinds of microfiber towels... since they are man-made, the fibers can be made and woven for different purposes. And of course different companies have different levels of quality.

For instance, waffle-weave towels like Water Magnets are good for drying, but would be bad for removing products like cleaners, waxes.

A more plush towel like Supreme Shines are good for removing product, but bad for drying.

And then some companies do make towels for glass, although I am one that doesnt like them. I actualy like the cheaper MF towels from Target (Vroom brand) for doing glass, interior dressings, etc.

Hello and welcome to mol. I think most of us older people on the forum, used diapers. The shortest answer I can give you is this. Technology, you have to change with the times. Thats the best I have. I do love using Microfibers they do a great job.
