  • New member with distressed cars!

    Hello,

My name is Bret and I am the proud owner of two cars that are in dire need of some TLC. I can handle most of the mechanical & electrical issues myself but I am not a body & paint guy.

    The two cars in question are;

My 1978 Porsche 928 (the Shark)

    And my 1978 MGB Roadster

I'm willing to learn and am considering purchasing a Porter Cable 7424 to cure some of the minor oxidation and swearl marks so I can enjoy my cars until I decide if I'm going to re-spray the entire bodies of my cars or just do partial re-sprays.

Anyway several folks tell me that the Porter Cable polisher/buffer it the way to go and a friend of mine on another forum recommended that I attend one of the training sessions to learn how to use it.

That said I look forward to learning and tapping the folks here for help.

    Thanks,
    Bret

      Welcome to MOL!

Yes, check out the list of links lilblkblt04 posted, you'll learn a lot. The PC7424/G100 is an excellent and worthwhile tool but proper technique is critical to get results. Attending a Meguiar's Saturday Clinic or a Thursday Night Open Garage would be a great idea to as there is no substitute for hands on training.

from those pictures.... your car doesnt look like it needs a repaint..... you can probably fix it all with a PC and some 80.... repaint should always be your last option....

        get the PC, a few W8006 pads, a bottle of 80, a bottle of 83, a bottle of 7

and if you dont have it already.... car wash soap(DC, gold class, nxt all are good imo...never use soap not intended for cars), wash mitt, clay, NXT tech wax, a lot of microfiber towels.....

Yeah, your 928 looks pretty good for not having a respray yet!!! You should be proud that it was preserved - my 73' 911 was covered with rust when we started and it's only five years older.

Anyways, a PC is a very good investment that can really bring out the best in the two cars.

By the way, I've never seen those rims on a 928. I've never thought of that swap, but they look great!

          Good luck

Thanks for the warm welcome folks,

But yes, while my cars look good - the photos are a bit deceiving. They both look great from 10-15ft away but up close they're in need of some help.

I'll start screening the previous posts and post questions as they come up.

            Thanks again,
