Hi There Shine Fans!
Here's the short version of my story. I bought a Jeep a few years ago and washed it often and waxed it once or twice in the last 4 years. Then I found this site! Wow! I can't beleive what you are doing with those nasty paint problems. Awesome work! Even though my paint has been thoroughly neglected and needs a repaint on certain panels, I felt that it would be a good place to start honing my skills. If I screw it up, at least I will learn from it.
Anyway, I figured I would start the cheap route. ScratchX, DC#2, and NXT Tech Wax. I started with a small area on the hood. After about 5 applications of ScratchX by hand with a terry cloth I was still a little disappointed (although it was ALOT better). I went in the basement and ran across my cheap old orbital sander and got an idea.
I didn't have any pads, so I found an airfilter for my jeep that had a foam prefilter on it...After I cut it to size and slapped it on the sander I was ready. The test spot on the hood came out flawless after 2 passes of ScratchX with some pressure applied, some DC#2, and NXT. I got in a hurry and did the rest of the vehicle in a couple hours or so, but there is still swirls all over the place (to be expected I guess on an 8 year old vehicle). It looked great in the shade, but in the sun...I've still some work to do. Soon I'll have to go shopping for an arsenal of Meguiar's supplies. And maybe a G100 if I can swing it.
Here's a couple pics of the test spot on the hood.
