Can anyone recommend a really good buffer. I am looking to buy a birthday present for someone that would use it for their cars and boat.

What is the skill level of the person you are planning to purchase this for? You have 2 basic choices, a Dual Action Polisher (foolproof) or a Rotary polisher (for experienced users).

well... he doesn't do it professionally.. but he certainly has alot of experience in his own driveway. I want to get him something that he can get a lot of mileage out of .... that he could use on the boat as well.

Are you thinking of something milder, easier to use, like the G-100 sold by Meguiars?

Or something stronger like a rotary buffer?

I believe boat finishes, gel-coats, are much more resistant to damage than a car finish.

If you go with a G-100 (DA Polisher), it will be safer for car use, but maybe take a bit longer on a boat.

If you go with a rotary, it may be easier on a boat, but a lot easier to damage the car.

People here can make many good rotary recomendations, and the G-100 is a great DA polisher. You may like to get a few car and boat care products as well from Meguiars to go with your gift.

I've heard him mention rotary buffers. so i would want to buy a good rotary buffer that would be best for the car ( the boat is really my secondary concern). And sorry .. you 'll have to really dumb it down for me. This is new to me!

The important thing to remember is that the best rotary buffer for the car is the one in the hands of a highly skilled operator. It's a lot like a scalpel. Using one incorrectly can leave you worse off than you started.

There are highly respected tools from other companies like Metabo, Fein, Dynabrade and Hitachi as well.

It's not possible to say any one is best overall. Each has its loyal fans. It's mostly personal choice/preference.

Unless you're really, really sure he specifically wants to learn to use a rotary I'd recommend the Meguiar's G-100 dual action polisher. It's much more forgiving but still highly effective.
