  • Smart Car

I just purchased a Smart fortwo. I understand this car has colored polypropylene body panels with a painted clear coat layer.
What specific Meguiar’s product is best for a paint sealant for his car? I’ve looked at both Mirror Glaze Polymer and Synthetic sealants. Should I also be looking at Meguiar’s Marine products as well?
I’m looking for a product that will both protect the exterior and minimize the effort needed to keep the exterior clean.

I think any Meguiars product will work. Although the panels are plastic, it has a conventional clear coat paint system. The best advice is to use clay to remove any contaminants (I know the vehicle is new, but it has spent time from the plant to transport to storage to delivery at the dealership) and then apply a wax/sealant. Best of luck with your new car.

as long as it has a clear coat, you should be able to go at it just like any other car

          Re: Smart Car

If you're sure the panels are painted and clear coated then treat them like you would the paint on any other car. Remember, you're working on the paint, not the substrate the paint is applied to*. Just as you don't need to use different wax on a Corvette (fiberglass body) than you do on a Mustang (steel body panels), you don't need anything different on the Smart. If you did, just imagine those Miata owners who'd need three different products for their steel doors and fenders, aluminum hood and trunk, and urethane bumper covers!!

Oh, but stay away from the marine line. Those products are designed for use on gel coat finishes which are much harder, and much thicker, than automotive paint.

*about the only time substrate matters is when rotary buffing as different materials will react differently to heat generated by the rotary buffing process. Some heat up faster, some hold heat longer, some withstand heat better.
