  • Full Page Quotes need to stop!

I am relatively new to this particular forum, but as a Computer Network Engineer, I have used hundreds of forums for many years (back to BBS).

Never before have I seen repeated 'full text' quotes copied into a reply like on this site. When that quote includes the same images as originally posted, it becomes extremely annoying to the reader to scroll through!

I have to wait to post a single image of my work; yet a new subscriber can litter several pages by reposting material I have already seen earlier in the same thread?

I appreciate all the great information available on MOL, but these Full Page Quotes need to stop.

Thank you all for the consideration.
    Regards,
    Richard

OK Murr, you and Joe have fun running this site.

Lot's of great info on here and lot's of attitude to go with it. Not really what I thought Meguiar's was trying to promote.

Sorry I picked the wrong place.

                  Richard,

It reads like it was a joke. What I've seen on forums, including this one, is folks have different online etiquette. What seems frustrating to a CNE is probably forum norm (dependent on forum members).

One of my pet peeves is misspelled words or "txt" language. You get by like with everything else and read into what the poster is trying to convey.

This forum is pretty docile compared to what I've seen on others.

                  Just my 2¢.

I go back to a time before discussion forum software was created, back to when Usenet Newsgroups were the only game in town. In fact I was posting to Usenet Newsgroups when rec.autos.misc became so busy that it was split into two groups, rec.autos.misc and rec.autos.tech That would be 1992 or 1993

Probably not longer than some but longer than most.

We have a pretty good set of forum rules that keep this forum running family friendly but they don't include telling people how to structure their posts in the way you're complaining about.

We like to keep this forum freewheeling, that is casual, fun and comfortable and while you do have a point that it's not necessary to quote entire posts in a reply, we don't attack people for doing this and we don't allow other's to attack people for doing this.

It takes some practice to quote someone and then slice out the portions that are not be addressed in the follow-up post, and there is no school on the Internet that shows people how to do this so most people aren't as proficient at this as we would all like but we still don't bring a big hammer down on them for the practice.

We do have a forum group specifically for teaching people how to interact on discussion forums and it's actually quite a resource for information. In fact I can't remember another forum I belong to that actually has a forum with content like we have here,

                      Forum related how-to articles

It's possible one of our talented forum members could create a how-to article on how to properly quote including slicing out non-pertinent portions as they relate to the follow-up.

Our Spam software places specific types of posts by NEW members with a low post count into Moderation, this applies to all new members as a preventative measure to protect the community from spam. We do our best to approve posts and pictures on-the-fly throughout the day as well as at the start of each day.

We appreciate your feedback on this topic and as mentioned above, it's possible we can do an article on how to properly use the quote feature to help our members to create better follow-up posts but we won't allow any member to bash or attack other members over this topic.

Joe and Matt are both respected long time members that have nothing but a LONG history of helping others with their posts. Their replies to you were innocent and harmless as they were just having a little fun and meant you no harm. That's part of our freewheeling, casual and fun environment.

If you're looking for accurate and helpful information on car care then you picked the right place. If you expect the diverse group of members on this forum or any forum to be experts at all the proper protocols for interacting on a forum then we're probably going to disappoint you and we apologize ahead of time.

We can't force people to surgically edit a quoted chunk of text to leave only the portion that applies to their follow-up just like we can't and don't force people to use a Spell Checker to check their spelling before posting their message.

We don make the link to I.E. Spell available to our forum members to download, install and use, but the freewheeling nature of this forum and most forums means that not everyone will do so.

That's almost 5 years ago... so we do have a record of at least trying to be pro-active in helping others to help themselves and make this forum a great place overall to hang out on.

                        foilr,

Just to point out, we would love to have a how-to article that included screen shots showing people how to properly use the quote feature included with vBulletin forum software.

The cool thing about our forum is that anyone can write and post a how-to article on how to better use the forum and post it here,

                        Forum related how-to articles

This would be a great addition to our already helpful collection of forum related how-to articles.

Perhaps you would like to take a stab at it?

Re: Full Page Quotes need to stop!

I can understand the OP's frustration regarding the original complaint. As already stated, we all have our own pet peeves regarding forum format.

For me, I tend to avoid reading posts if I find it takes too much effort to try to understand what the poster is trying to write (Example: Writing in "text" format, or extremely poor grammar and writing skills).

People that are genuinely trying to seek help on forums need to be able to write well enough minimally so people can understand their problem. Otherwise, very few will respond to their questions.
