Meguiar's Car Care 201
Saturday October 8, 2011
Once again our Advanced Class was full of guys with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for detailing - just the way we like it!!
As per usual, following the classroom portion of the program we headed to the garage to get down to business with some power tools. We start, as always, by damp sanding with 1500 grit finishing discs on the air powered DA sander. Here, the foam interface pad is being affixed to the buffer prior to mounting the actual sanding disc.
This is an on edge shot of the 1500 grit finishing disc; note the integrated foam backer that differentiates the finishing disc from a sanding disc.
Immediately after sanding with 1500 grit you'll notice an almost complete absence of any reflections in the paint.
But after following with 3000 grit the reflections are already coming back as the finish is further refined. Imagine how much easier this is to buff out than the coarser grit sanding marks would be.
After sanding with 1500 grit and then refining with 3000 grit, it was on to M105 with a wool pad spinning at around 1800 rpm via rotary buffer.
Reflections return pretty quickly following the compounding step!
A quick demonstration to show how quickly the paint can become very hot when using even moderate pressure with a foam cutting pad. It took just a few seconds to reach this temperature!
Lots of practice, plenty of experimentation and a general increase in confidence using both processes discussed in class.
