  • Meguiar's Safety Glasses/hearing protection....

A good item Meguiar's should offer would be safety glasses, especially for those using a buffer. There is always potential to get someting in your eyes so why take a chance?

Also, hearing protection...something that many of us never thought of using. Using a rotary in a garage makes using ear protection an essential.

Good points Tim. Just to note, in our video, "How to Remove Paint Defects", we show and recommend wearing safety glasses whenever using machines to work on paint, this includes the rotary buffer, the dual action polisher and the air powered D.A. sander.

I don't think we touched on hearing protection, but you're right about the noise being a potential safety issue especially in close quarters and even more so whenever a person is going to be using a machine for an extended period of time.

Anyone can watch our how-to video on line for free here,

    How to remove paint defects

Or it can be purchased in VHS format here,

saftey glasses with the little flash lights on them but instead of the standard flash light, use that xeon (is that right?) bulb that some of the guys are using to help find swirls.

Meguiar's safety glasses do exist, you see them in the video.

Here's Jeff Brown, Senior Area Sales Manager for Meguiar's in Northern California (and all around swell guy!) wearing the fashionable, yet elusive safety accessory at NXT ti II.

Perhaps Meguiar's could consider making them available as a catalog item.

I think Mike Penninton might have some insight into the Meguiar's Safety Glasses, I'll check with him.

            Hey PC,

I have seen those glasses. What I am referring to are glasses that are made available to the public or perhaps a promotional item to be added to a "G100 kit deal". Further, I would also suggest using UV protection in the lenses as many people detail outside.

2000, great idea about the xeon lights!!!

            Mike,

I use a pair of ear muffs that were designed for shooting. As such, you can hear voices not too badly through them, but they block out the harmful levels of sound. Perhaps an integrated hearing protection/safety glass combination would be an idea.

Yep, that is the idea all right!! I have seen set-ups like that before, but have always wondered how comfortable they are? Part of my suggestions relates to the idea that if the glasses etc are comfortable, AND stylish, people will wear them. I hate to say it, but people will often chose fashion over function!

These are called "Optimuffs" and they use lens inserts from UVEX safety glasses (clear or dark grey, both UV protecting).

They're actually quite comfortable (on my jumbo size head anyway) and I'm really picky about fit. They aren't as comfortable as my favorite Peltor muffs alone but are more comfortable than wearing the Peltors with safety glasses.

I've also seen glasses with ear plugs molded into the frames and ear plugs with little cords that connect to glasses but I haven't tried them.

                      What about respitory protection? gloves?

I mean sometimes wearing a mask is a great idea. 3M makes some good activated charcol masks for less than $50

Obviously wet products aren't a problem usually, but let's say you are removing dryed wax with a power tool, the dust will be up in the air especially if you are in a closed garage.

I am not saying this would be terrible with Gold Class as it is Carnuba (Carnuba is non-toxic I think. It is used in Tic-Tacs too to give them a shiny coating). I am just saying if you are a professional detailer always working with the products, I recomend you take more care than someone who only comes into contact with the products a few times a year.

If you breath in some of the chemicals everyday, that is not good. If you do so a few times a year... you shouldn't get sick unless you have allergies to the products.

I would also suggest pro detailers wear some sort of gloves or at least wash hands before eating. Products such as wax contain petroleum distillates... which will absorb through the skin. I am not saying this will harm you for a very long time, but I recomend people avoid prolonged contact and at least make sure to wash hands before eating. Other petroleum products like Gasoline are not supposed to be touched or get on skin, yet it happens and in general people are okay. The point is there are warnings about many of the chemicals in car car, so please watch that too.

I would agree that safety glasses and ear protection is more important though.

You can buy a vented N95 rated mask for less than $5.00 that should do the job very well.

As for glasses, I like the UVEX brand myself. We wore them at work all the time, and they have a UV coating on them too.

I don't wear ear protection with my PC, but it sounds like a good idea if your working in a garage or something. I like the soft foam type of ear plugs. You can sort of lodge them in sideways to muffle loud sounds without making it too hard to hear normal sounds.

I might be a bit wierd in comparison to most people, but when I apply a product I read the can and if it says Skin Irritant I wear a glove.

For example, Endurance Gel said something like Skin Irratant wash area to treat irritation.

Well, I do not really belive that most of the products do irritate skin, but never the less it is a good idea to wear gloves if you touch the stuff all the time. If you just do this occasionally you should be fine washing your hands. I figure, if I actually have to touch the stuff I should wear a glove to be safe.

I keep a box of disposable nitrile gloves with my detailing supplies and use them most times I'll be getting chemicals on my hands.

Even without the health issues, it's nice to have clean hands at the end of a job.

I missed this thread in July, but safety is always a great idea. I wear eye glass all the so I do not wear safety glasses, but I probably should. I do use the little foam ear plugs and they work great at blocking out the sound of buffers and harmful dB's of vacuums and extractors. I think a line of safety items from Meguiars would be a great addition to their product line and would let consumers know Meguiars cares about them and there safety.
