A modification to the PC Dual Action Polisher which Meguiar's endorses, the G-100. Attached to the backing plate would be some sort of pressure sensor to tell you how hard you are pressing it against the car's finish.

That would be kind of helpful... Something on the black housing above the pad. Like the idea.Brandon

I bet you I could design one
It would be adjustable from 0 -20 pounds, and have a nice audible tone spec'd within 2 lbs. so you know when your in range.
I like the idea!!
I have the plans and design payout already.

I came up with a mod to the mod I brought up. Instead of a guage (such as a needle guage), a more compact system using green, yellow, and red LED's could be used. These can be placed on the side of the PC. At 10-14 pounds, the green LED lights up. 15-19 pounds, the yellow LED lights. And 20+ lbs of pressure will light the red LED.Proud owner of the finest looking car in the parking lot.

I think a backlit LCD display of the pressure (in lbs.) would be even better. When you exceed the recommended preset pressure the display and backlight should flash on and off.

A backlit lcd would be nice, but consider the wear and tear the lcd could experience from usage by a detailing professional. LED's, on the other hand, cost less to replace, and would be a whole lot cheaper (and most likely much easier) to implement.Proud owner of the finest looking car in the parking lot.

The readout, LED, LCD or whatever is secondary. How do you propose to sense the force?
Sensing the actual force at the backing plate means hanging the sensor out on the oscillating assembly (a very inhospitable location) and somehow communicating the output signal back to the readout.
Sensing force in the drive assembly would be the next option but would require some degree of redesign of the mechanical system and is still a less than ideal environment for strain sensing.
It would be vastly simpler to sense hand force applied to the head but that would mean the weight of the machine would not be included and the real applied force would diverge from the indicated force based on the angle of operation.
Common strain sensing methodologies would require filtering (electronic, mechanical or a combination) to remove the effects of machine’s considerable vibration.
Not suggesting that any of that is insurmountable, just that it’s a complex engineering exercise. My hat’s off to anyone willing to try it.
