Alan, this doesn't really look like brush marks. My red pad has bruch marks, the surface of the pad is still pretty much evenly flat, and like I said before, has seen more use, and therefore more brushing. I thought that too at first, but this happened during the buffing process, like while brushing the pad clean.

On topic. The only two times I have seen a pad like that is after using brush to clean the pad while using a heavy cut compound and after hitting the pad on a emblem or badge. I would replace the pad as pads are not that expensive.
