  • G110V2 Revving (Is this normal?)

    Hello,

I recently received a replacement g110v2 and had a chance a couple of weeks back to finally test it out. I have seen a couple of demonstrations of the cruise control feature on youtube (like the video below) and wanted to see/hear it myself.

However when i tried it myself (on speed 1) the machine starts to rev when I apply pressure onto the machine (video demonstration below). I posted a thread a while back about this experience, but have not received feedback from other g110v2 users if this was normal or not; link here:http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...G110V2-Revving

So to summarize my concern, is the revving normal in speed 1? Could this imply that there is something wrong with the cruise control mechanism? The Meguiar's video demonstration uses speed 2 and I also tested the cruise control with it. I noticed two things. First the sound of the cruise control kicking in was faint to almost nothing (unlike the video). Secondly, I also noticed that the pad spins only when it is pushed down by the weight of the machine, and when I use heavy pressure, but with slight to moderate pressure it causes the pad to stop. Does cruises control only respond to heavy pressure, and not moderate?

Hope to get some feedback and insight from Customer Service and also other members that come across this thread.

    Thank you.

Nope that is not normal. Sounds like a cord connection in the back. Mine has started to do that before with 3 different G110v2s.

Re: G110V2 Revving (Is this normal?)

We do sometimes see this anomaly when running the tool on speed setting 1, and while it may seem like the tool isn't working properly this is actually a very poor test of the tool. There is so little juice flowing at that speed (for lack of a better way to phrase that) that the cruise control feature doesn't behave the way you might expect it to. The Cruise Control feature is designed to increase power to the pad when the tool is experiencing heavy pressure, and it works great under "normal" use. But pressure at speed setting 1 isn't really "normal" and the circuitry can essentially become confused. There isn't much power going through the tool at that point, so trying to ramp it up to account for the pressure may cause this surging. While it may seem like there's a problem with the tool because of this, it's almost never the case. You won't be using the tool at speed 1 anyway so this behavior at that setting is inconsequential. Try using the tool at speed 3 or higher, which is where you'll be using the tool 99.9% of the time, especially with any degree of pressure.

Keep in mind, though, that speed 3 is generally used for final polishing, wax application, etc so it's very rare that a lot of pressure is used. Therefore, it's easier to stop rotation at speed 3 than it is at speed 5. At speed 5 you should be able to exert quite a bit of pressure and still get spin from the pad. Of course, the thinner the pad the more pressure you can apply, which is why the microfiber pads will still rotate under extreme pressure (not that we're recommending you do that, it's just an example) that would stop a thicker foam pad. If you compare this to our older G100 (and it's sister tool from the original manufacturer) you'll find it's quite easy to stop the pad spinning even at speed 5 since those tools lack both the basic power and the Cruise Control feature.

If you still see inconsistent behavior at higher speeds we'll be happy to replace the tool.

Thanks for your input Michael! I was really hoping that I wouldn't have to send the machine back to you guys already right after getting a replacement when I saw/heard the revving. However your explanation makes sense with my situation! I was really curious to see the cruise control feature and a comment on youtube said it was easiest to see it in action in speed 1 or 2. I cant' recall exactly how the machine was at the higher speeds, but I won't be able to test the machine out anytime soon in my cold winter garage. I will definitely keep an eye on the machine's performance with the higher speeds when I work with it again during spring. Cheers!

One thing I have to say is that Meguiar's customer service is top notch. We only hear about the "bad" V2's not the many that work and still work today. I thought my G100 was malfunctioning and I sent it to be tested at a TNOG and it worked fine, operator error.

I voiced it before, but get a good extension cord for these machines. My dad who was an electrician before passing on swears to use a good extension tools for your power tools. He has some tools older than me that I now have in my possession. I'm going to be 44 in February.

I use a 12ga extension cord with all my power tools. Not the cheap 14-16ga cords you get at such and such store for 15 bucks.

It's like when I ran the sound mixer at my church, a great Peavy sound system, use cheap mic chords, it will sound like a cheap system. etc.
