  • Clear coat issue following waxing - with pic's

Below are two pictures of my recently waxed car. The car was perfect prior to waxing and the recent heavy rain (aside from a ding on the passenger side rear door). I waxed this 4 days ago, since it has rained just over 14 inches and turned cold (70's from the recent mid 90's). I'm obviously concerned this is a permenant issue. ANY thoughts, help or guidance would be greatly appreciated! [IM

Did you remove the wax after applying it? These pictures boggle my mind... the only way that could result from "waxing" a car would be if the wax was applied and not fully removed, and then somehow partially was washed away in the rain.

Aside from that, it looks more like clear coat failure to me.

What was your application and removal process? What product did you use?

What year, make and model is the car? Is it new to you, or have you had it for a while?

This is really strange, to say the least. If the wax itself was causing this then you'd expect it be all over the vehicle, not just top surfaces. Then again, there's nothing in any of our waxes (or any of our competitors waxes, for that matter) than can cause clear coat failure. But this almost doesn't quite look like typical clear coat failure either. Looking at the reflection of the antenna in the second image it appears to be showing what looks more like a clear reflection and not just a shadow (please correct us if we're wrong there) and you wouldn't expect failing clear to give that nice a reflection.

What wax did you use? What is the year, make and model of the car? Have you tried even something as simple as a mild cleaner wax, light paint cleaner, or even just a fresh application of the same wax over this?

Mark Kleis: I did remove the wax... As for the application/removal method; I usedthe supplied applicator to apply the paste. Once hazed (10 or so min.) I used a microfiber cloth to remove/buff byhand. The car is a 02 Lexus IS300 whichI have had for years and more than routinely waxed as I am very particularabout this car.

Michael Stoops: To say it is strange is an understatement.I'm quite concerned as you can tell. Actually, the white spots are all over the vehicle, it's simply more prevalentin the top surfaces. The surface is verysmooth and reflective (like glass, though I did not clay the car prior to thiswaxing).

As for the product, usually I use the Gold wax but this timeI used the ultra-paste. It seemed to goquite well though I did not clay bar as I have in the past. As above, the car is a 02 Lexus IS300 -factory paint. At this point I have donenothing as I first noticed this yesterday and have not had time. I also did not want to take the chance ofdoing more damage. Again thanks to allfor the help.

What does it feel like if you rub your skin or fingernail across the white area? Have you tried applying a small amount of wax to an affected area and then wiping it clean with a microfiber towel?

Smooth as glass... No noticable bumps or rough places on the surface. At this point I have not attempted anything in fear of further damage. However, I would like a few suggestions.

We just reviewed these images with our Quality Assurance Manager - we keep coming back to just how bizarre this is. We would like you to try, just on a small spot, something with some paint cleaning ability such as a cleaner wax, SwirlX, ScratchX 2.0, Ultimate Compound, M80, etc. Apply with a foam wax applicator and only moderate pressure, wiping off any residue before it dries. Just do a small area to start, and please report back your findings.

I can't adequately express my concern about this. I've often said I lost sleep over something... this time I actually have. Thank you again for your assistance and I will try this tomorrow and post the results.

Well, life hasn't changed that much.... I wasn't able to get to my car this weekend due to work. I'll work on it this evening and post pic's/results.

Looks to me that the clearcoat is starting to seperate from the basecoat .
