  • Strange! Ultimate Wash & Wax

This isn't really a complaint or anything. I'm a happy fan of Meguiar's and I wouldn't complain about such a small issue. But here's something that surprised me...

A friend of mine ordered a bottle of Ultimate Wash and Wax just at about the same time as me, but we bought from different suppliers (I got my bottle directly from Meguiar's Spain and he bought his at an on-line store). And his unopened bottle is full up to the top but mine has about 1-2 ounces less! Aren't Meguiar's products filled by automatic filling machines? It's strange that there was such a difference. Here are the pictures to prove it:

I have only seen them the way it is shown in the second picture here in the US. That is interesting though.

Some times products are over filled, but rarely are they under filled. I would bet that your bottle has 48oz of product in it just like the label states. As a consumer we understand the appearance issue this presents, but we are not out to short our customers. You would be surprised at the fill levels of all products including our competitors if all bottles were transparent.

A few years back we changed the cans our paste waxes were sold in. Although the exact same amount of product was in each can the appearance was off because of the new style can. Unfortunately this looks bad even though our customers were getting the same product they always had. I hope this helps explain a little without getting into too much detail over manufacturing, marketing, and regulatory issues.

I agree, Brian. It actually seems strange to see a bottle or container filled right up to the top. My bottle looks more "normal". And it definitely is a sign of honesty that the bottle is made out of transparent plastic.

Mine has only been like the second pic. Your friend got lucky. A free wash inside the bottle.

I noticed the exact same issue at my Walmart. About 20 bottles of the new UQWW and they all had different levels. I always try to find the one with the most!

Here is my first bottle from back in January when the product first hit store shelves.

I'm currently studying Industrial and Systems Engineering and we go over lots of different issues with manufacturing issues, such as quality control on product volume levels or weight. While the machines aren't going to fill the bottles up exactly the same each time, they typically will be +/- a few ounces of the stated claim on the package.

Manufacturing quality control will run statistical analysis on samples of filled bottles and make sure that batches are being filled to their stated amount on the package. A lot of times, they even have them fill slightly more than the stated amount (an extra .2 oz or so, all depending on product size) in the event that a bottle is filled a little less, the customer is still getting what they paid for.

Meguiar's products typically tend to have pretty even levels, especially when comparing them on store shelves, as those are normally from the same batch. Different batches have different statistics, and manufacturers go batch by batch to make sure the next one they produce is still in spec.

Who knows, maybe your friend got a batch that just so happened to fill more than normal, and he got one of the bottles that was at the high fill point of that batch, while you could have gotten the exact opposite, a low batch and you got a low filled bottle.

There are so many factors in the process to know for sure, but go ahead try UWW, it works awesome!

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                    Remove swirls my friends.
