  • Spray pump rant

    Dear Meguiar's,

I've about had it up to here with spray pump failures in several bottles of your products (various). I like your stuff a lot but not being able to apply the products because the pump is crapped out is really annoying.

My experience with failed pumps is usually from one season to the next, although I've also experienced a same season failure.

Why the heck aren't your pumps holding up?

If you are mostly experiencing the failure one season to the next. It seems that a logical conclusion can be derived at. The product has dried in the sprayer. So why not run some hot water through the tube/sprayer at the beginning of your season? That should help you out tremendously.

I've been using Meguiars spray products for three years and have never had this issue. I do show my car so I normally use everything up by the end of summer a couple of times. I would definitely try to use hot water and see if that makes it better. You could always purchase a generic spray bottle and put the products in those and then label what it is.

Where are you storing these products during the winter months? If the product freezes in the sprayer it ruins them quickly.

In regard to the suggestion to run hot water through the spray pump's pickup tube I would like to comment that getting the pump out of the bottle is not a user friendly endeavor. The design seems to discourage separating the pump from the bottle.

The caps are pretty difficult to remove, but that is by design to discourage some less than honest folks from buying the product, emptying the product, refilling the bottle with water, and returning it for refund.

There is a trick to getting them off, but I learned it from another member (paulcr39)

Directly below the trigger there will be a small area where the screw on part of the sprayer is visible. Grab it here and and unscrew it. It will click and make noise but should come off.

Very rarely do I have a problem with Meguiars sprayer heads.

I have used hundreds of those consumer bottles and about only five bottles/sprayer heads have failed.

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with our products.

Try soaking the sprayers in warm water for a couple of hours, this tend to loosen some of the dried product that could be giving you a hard time.

Also, be sure to call the 1-800-347-5700 Customer Hotline to voice your complaint.

                    Once again our deepest apologies.

Yep, that's me, Captain Helpful! I cleaned out my private messages just the other night and almost PMed you to see how that went.. now I know!

And as for the OP: I've had sprayers fail from Mother's, Meguiar's, Rain-X, Eagle One, Turtle Wax, Black Magic, etc. That is why I always save the good bottles after I use them. I remove the top, clean them out with Dawn and hot water, then let them air dry a few days. The only bottle I was unable to reuse was Hot Shine Tire Spray. That top just would not come off.

When the inevitable happens I can go to my stockpile, make the switch and I'm good to go. Plus I always keep a Sharpie and Avery labels in with my empty bottle collection for quick re-labeling. I just checked, I have 8 ready to go.

I've also had this type go bad.

When I ordered the Detailer Line of products I bought several extra sprayers (regular and chemical resistant ) just to be safe.

It's funny you should mention the Hot Shine Tire Spray - it's what brought me here today to see if this was common - I'm on my second successive bottle of Hot Shine with pump failure. The first bottle I probably got about ten squirts out of and the second only a few before failure. These sprayers are not easily disassembled or reassembled as I messily found out today. Ended up pouring out onto a microfiber sponge and applying by hand while wasting quite a bit during the sprayer removal. I don't know if it's specific to this sprayer design or what but what a pita. I'm still a Meguiar's user for about 90% of my detailing products but I know better than to buy Hot Shine and try to use in this bottle. Just wanted to bring to your attention.

Oh, and is it me or did my hands smell like coconut when I was done?

I've had a little trouble with UQD lately. When I take the sprayer off there is, what looks like, a piece of foam in the draw tube. I get it out and I'm good to go.
