  • G110 DA burned my bumper =(

I just recently took the detailing 101 class offer by meguairs and did a detailing job on my 05 acura tl which ended up looking great, except for one thing... it burned a small area of my bumper paint Is it because of the plastic/polyurethane bumper? I also bought the car used so could it have been that the bumper was repainted?

Secondly, what do I do now? Any suggestions on how to patch up that area of paint and will meguiar's take care of the burned section of the bumper? I did a test area on the car and it worked fine. My car was also used as a test vehicle during the detailing 101 session and there were no problems whatsoever using the g110.

Here are a few photos. One is of the pad with the damage, possibly from the pad contacting the sharp edge of the bumper and the second is of the burned paint on the bumper. Also, should I give meguiar's customer service a call? I figured it would be better that I posted here since I am able to provide pictures. I don't mind driving up to Irvine to show Meguiar's the damage as well as my technique. The tools I used was the g110, softbuff 2.0 polishing pad and ultimate compound.

I would first check to see if that bumper was ever repainted. It is nearly impossible to burn through paint using a G110 as it would stop rotating and just vibrate if you were putting too much force on it.

Being that area is a high point, it is very likely that i was repainted and the paint was so thin it chipped off.

The part of missing paint looks like it got chipped off rather than burned through.

Yeah, it also looks like a bit of the plastic bumper was burned off as well

Would touch up paint be sufficient for fixing this up?

I used a meguair's softbuff 2.0 yellow 7inch polishing pad on the backing plate that came with the g110.

Well I would find out if it was repainted first. You said you bought it used and it very well could have been repainted. If that is the case you could probably get the place that you bought it from/people who painted it to repair it. It might not happen but it's always worth a try.

This happened to me on the rotary a few months ago on a factory painted panel, and it can happen on the G110, though it's much more rare.

What speed were you working on?

The bumper will require a repaint to fix the area. You can touch it up but you will still be able to see it.

Looks like the paint may have been cracked already and when the pad caught just enough of the sharp point of the cracked paint it chipped the paint right off. Seems like there is Ultimate compound on the right side of the crack which may make it appear that it's burned by filling in the ridge.

Bumpers on newer cars are covered with a fairly thin vinyl cover. Many are not even backed with much metal but have a honeycomb or rigid foam material for backing. As such they can't handle the heat from machine polishing well. There is little there to absorb and dissipate the heat so they burn, melt or soften the paint easily. I've seen several reports of this happening with both rotary and PC use.

that might actually be the verdict as I recall Mike from the detailing class talking about something like this during the class.

AM i plain out of luck and will just have to live with it?

I can't tell from the photo but you may want to see a body shop. A body shop may be able to fill and airbrush blend the paint.

You could go for a DIY repair. You might need some body filler and bumper paint. Your paint appears to be metallic which is hard to match well as a DIY but it sure should look better than it does now.

Are you referring to the crisp edges surrounding the bare spot or the little ridge of what appears to be paint on the lower border?
I am not sure what a burn looks like, but, I imagine the border would not be well defined. Any tips on how you can tell the difference between
a burn and a chip? Thanks.

Do fiberglass bumpers react the same or differently than plastic bumpers? Specifically with regards to polishing.
