I've had similar problems with pads separating and melting onto backing plates. This was with Meguiar's pad & plates. Then I tried using PC plates with Meguiar pads and still had meltdowns. Next I tried SM Arnold pads and haven't had a problem since.

When compounding isn't necessary but to remove minor to slightly moderate scratching/swirling I'll use it at speed 6 with a good amount of pressure. I can be abusive on pads because I'm trying to generate some heat like in the above circumstance. SM Arnold pads look & feel inferior to Meguiar's pads but I can't afford paying for new plates and pads every other detail and the difference is negligible.

Another problem I encountered was the loops on Meguiar's plates are very short resulting in a short lifespan. I'm guessing this is a profit thing.

I have asked Meguiars personnel about this but none of their suggestions worked hence the move to SM Arnold.

This thread was created by splitting it out of the original Dual Action Counterweight "Controversy" Thread to keep the original thread on topic.

Meguiar's does not recommend using any of our pads at the 6.0 setting.

      Meguiar's is looking into this.

If you continue to have problems with our foam pads or our backing plates, simply call our Customer Care Hotline at 1-800-347-5700 and explain to them your experience and problem and they'll make it right with you.
