  • Brand new G110 died after 2 hours

I bought my G110 in July and finally had a chance to use it yesterday. Brand new still in the box. Started using #80 glaze per Mike Phillips and it was coming out beautiful! I noticed a slight slow down in speed not related to pressure. Finally, it completely died after slowing down. This was associated with a burning smell. This was on setting 5. Kicking it up to 6 let it work a while longer but it's now dead. Not what I was expecting for a Meguar's product.

Regardless of how quickly it is to be replaced by Meguiar's, I expected FAR better quality from such a reputable company.

Now come's the hassle of shipping it back (on who's dime?) and waiting for my new one. And how long will that one last ?

Placed my order through ADS around July 24, Receipt Number: 1932-3336-9060-0750. What's the next step?

      ^^ agreed ^^

Although everyone has a problem with something at one time, doesn't mean the company is selling bad stuff (at least it's not an Xbox 360, 1 out of 3 break).

Give customer support a jingle and they will help you.

The unfortunate is that we only hear of the ones that break, not the many that went out and worked fine.

      If we had a thread....

"hey my new G110 works great, didn't break" and how many would respond to that.

it may be on your dime to ship, but your deed will not go unoticed by Meguiars.

if i'm not mistaken... since you purchased it from ADS, you'll have to contact Rick and let him know of the situation. if it's within the year time (i believe that's the length of the warranty) that you bought it (which it looks like it is), i'm sure he'll take care of it for you...

Either way, If purchased from Meguiars or ADS they will take care of you. It might be a hassle to ship it back. Like the others have it will not go unnoticed.

The next step is the first step and that's to call Customer Care

The above phone number should have been included somewhere in any documentation included with the polisher.

Why should he be the one to pay the shipping? I would think Meg's would cover the shipping since it was their product that failed. Whenever I send something in for repairs I don't pay the shipping the company whose product it is takes care of it.

vetterc5, first off, I apologize for the problem you've had with your G110 and please know that we'll set things right for you. Give us a call at the Customer Care Center - 800.347.5700 - and we can set things in motion even though you purchased the G110 through another vendor. While we do ask that you initially handle all shipping to us, we will more than make up for that inconvenience by sending some free product along with the replacement machine.

As for reliability of the G110 - we've got several here at Meguiar's garage that have been used heavily without issue. Sure, we've all seen comments from MOL members about units failing, but what we don't see are the literally thousands of people who have purchased a G110 without issue.

As I stated above, Meguiar's does not pay for return shipping but we will more than make up for that with products generally used with the G110 or with some other product if the owner so chooses. I don't think you'll find that from other vendors. And who couldn't use some extra M80, or a pad or two, or even some microfiber towels?

Thank you all. I'll make the call and get another. Just my luck I got a bad one first try I guess. When it worked, it worked great. Following Mike's advice and using the right products, my black 'Vette has never looked so good. It was just frustrating that I had the car 3/4's done with the #80 and had to finish the last part of the polishing process and the NXT (had the sealer ready to go) wax by hand, but it was sure worth it!

Please forgive my grumbling. I should have counted to 10 before sounding off. Sounds like I will be taken care of.

Re: Brand new G110 died after 2 hours

I had the same issue as described above. Fortunately I was able to get about 40 cars out of it. 1 week ago, my replacement G110 arrived in the mail. No shipping charge either way (dropped it off at Irvine) and it came to my home with a free yellow pad. Off to a good start, although the down time was about 3 weeks.

Now, today, I noticed when going to wax at speed level 3 it seemed pretty slow. I cranked it up to 5 and finished the job. Went to turn it on a few minutes later to catch some areas I missed and nothing. If I'm lucky enough to turn the motor just right it will turn on. What a pain!

Called in today (Saturday) and I was advised that I would have to go through the 3 week process again. I asked if possibly I could use one of the shop units until it returned. I have customers all backed up because of these failures.

I was concerned about the G100 reliability in the first place - was this a hobby level toy, vs a something from a real machine company. Those fears have now been confirmed. I love Meguiar's and sell so much of their products it is incredible. Nothing will change from doing that, but something is up with the speed control or the motor brush - none of which is serviced separately - like a real tool company does. It is purely a throw away piece. Even if they keep replacing it, that's not the point.

Something like this should last for years, even with daily use. Thousands may have had luck with them, but I guess there is no independent way to determine that.

Just wanted to rant, since I'm now done for the day, the weekend, and the next two weeks at least....

Re: Brand new G110 died after 2 hours

*Most* people who buy the G110 have no problems (like me) so it is unfortunate you ran into these circumstances.

Since you are using it in a professional setting, you might want to consider the new PC on account of the increase in power and the 3 year warranty. Food for thought.

OK, this may be a stupid question and I don't mean to thread hijack, but for somebody who wants a DA but has never used one before, would it make more sense to get the PC7424 versus the G110? Or is that stupid? I'll probably just wait, save up some money, then maybe try to buy a DA next April or May or somewhere in there. But I'm not sure what to get. Any thoughts? Is the PC7424 too powerful for a newbie polisher? I just really don't want to be the person who gets the bum polisher.

I've had a PC7424 / G100 unit for 10 years (purchased it from Meguiars), and it has really been a workhorse for me.

After hearing about all of the failure issues with the G110, I would opt for the PC7424 myself. But where are the PC's made now? In Mexico, or the USA?

The new PC is only marginally stronger than the G110 and it comes with a 3 year warranty. It's a fairly easy machine to use, but does not come without risk. You'll see a thread by Rasky about bumper wrinkle and you'll see that nothing is 100% safe.

But if you follow the techniques the pros use, you'll be fine.
