Yes, even pre-softened ones since it's very easy to scoop too much product. Usually, some old style hard paste wax may have cracks that look like the wax has gone bad, but pre-softened ones MAY have this appearance. But doing this technique is a must for proper product pick-up and will allow for a more controlled product use and in turn will make the user apply it a lot thinner.
