105 by hand. Do I need 205?

I plan to use M 105 by hand using a german tri foam applicator to correct some swirls and isolated scratches. The Car is dark blue in color. Do I need to use M 205 as a second step or can I skip it? Also, is Ultimate Polish the same thing as M 205?

M105 is one of the heaviest compounds Megs Makes.. and while it finishes down pretty fine.. its not flawless and will almost be guaranteed to leave hazing on the finish......

Compounds are used to the removal of medium to HEAVY imperfection in the paint by leveling...

Polishes [which is what 205 is] are used to finish the paint in preparation for LPS's... most have light abrasives while a pure polish has close to none.... However M205 is considered a very fine polish]

and no ultimate compound is a consumer based compound that is closer to 105 than it is to 205

Ultimate POLISH is a consumer marketed derivative of 205.

The short answer to the OP would be "probably".

The long answer: It depends on the hardness of your paint, the severity of the defects, how you apply the compound etc etc.. If, after compounding there is no marring and/or you are happy with the way it looks, you can skip the M205 / UP.

Do a test spot with M205 / UP first, and see if you can see a difference...

Thanks a lot for the replies, appreciate it. I now understand that an aggressive compound should be followed by a finishing polish like UP/205. It may be wrong to discuss other brands on this forum so please let me know if this is inappropriate. I don't have any M205/UP but what I do have is a mild polish for use by hand called Bilt Hamber Cleanser Polish. It has mild abrasives, some fillers and a little protection. It even works as a base for most sealants & waxes. Can I use this polish instead of M 205 after using M 105?

Never a problem discussing other brands here, so no worries there. We don't see any reason why you couldn't use the Bilt Hamber product following M105 - it sure sounds like it would do the trick.

I got me some M105 and a German Tri Pam applicator by Wolfgang to correct some swirls and isolated scratches as I do not own a machine polisher. I got tired of hiding them under filler heavy polishes and sealants. The correction was planned for the weekend but I discovered a long scratch on both the doors today. Looks like somebody ran a sharp object while walking by. I was very angry and worried so cleaned the panel and hit it with the 105 three times. I have to say I am very impressed. The scratch is not only gone but it has been corrected rather than hidden. It won't come back after a while.

This is the first time I have used a compound and it was a lot of work by hand. Good for the car and good for me as I burnt a few calories. Sorry no pictures as this was done in a hurry. The thing is, if M105 failed by hand; I was planning to pick up a rotary tomorrow. But the compound delivered. I will check how it looks under direct sunlight and maybe post a picture.

A rotary or a DA buffer? Not a good idea to use a rotary if you haven't used one before. You could easily damage the paint..
