  • Wax Application Question

    Spring is in the air so it was time to get rid of winter's contamination. The paint on my bright silver 370Z is pretty pristine with no swirls or other anomalies. Small rock chips are corrected with Dr Color Chip. On days when it's too cold to detail the car myself I have a trusted detailer do it for me and they use a touchless wash system that cleans the underside of the car as well as the exterior and the job is completed by hand inside the shop. Yesterday morning I used the hand in a plastic bag and found the paint was pretty rough with the usual invisible contaminants so I drove a few blocks to a car wash and used the high pressure wand and soap to knock off any dust or dirt (won't touch it with one of those brushes). Brought the car home and put it in the garage, turned on a heater and finished drying. The car already had a coat of NXT2 wax. So this is what I started with.

    I started with a new Meguiar's smooth clay bar kit and did the whole car, drying and wiping down each section as I finished. Next I started applying the new White Wax which prompts this question and post. First off the wax is difficult to see on a silver finish even though I have a well lighted garage with T8 fluorescent fixtures. After applying wax to a section and looking from different angles I could see small areas that looked as though there was no wax on them. Going back over those areas would create other areas that appeared to be "waxless" even though I knew I had applied wax there. I suspect that this is not unique to me.

    1. Is this normal and do these seemingly waxless spots actually have wax on them or does the wax just slide over it without sticking?
    2, I'm applying the wax by hand using the supplied applicator. Is there a trick or procedure to use to insure an adequate coat of wax is being applied?
    3. Is it possible to add some color to a wax so it would be easier to see on a light colored car?
    4. Do I need to apply a 2nd coat of wax to insure adequate coverage?

    1. I have not used that product, but sounds normal from other waxes I have used. Remember the 'wax that you are seeing' is just the excess, not what is staying on the surface.

    2. Part of that is where the 2 thin coats comes in, with the idea you wont miss the same area twice. Usually isnt a problem after a few applications, but the first panel or so where the pad is still dry can be a bit trickier. You may want to spread a little wax over the surface of the pad at first so you dont have a dry area on it.

    And then also things like a spray wax in the future to keep touching things up, again the odds being you wont keep missing the same area.

    4. You certainly can, and Meguiars always recomends two thin coats. However, with a cleaner/wax, if you apply one coat, then a second coat, you are basically removing the first coat. Not that you really get '2 layers thick' of wax anyway, but for the best chance of the most wax being there, using a regular wax like the Nxt 2.0 would be good for the second coat.

      Hello Murr and thanks for your input. I have indeed noticed the phenomenon with other waxes but this time my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to ask. I guess those spots that look "waxless" will have wax on them. I will apply a coat of NXT 2 this morning as soon as the garage is warmed up. Sure seems like it would be nice to have the wax tinted a light blue or something so it would be really easy to see as it's being applied but I imagine Meguiar's techs may have already thought of the idea. My Z does have a nice shine.

        Try using a hand held light like a brinkman or a flashlight to look down the side at a different angle.
        Light colors such as silver or white make it difficult to see the wax as you stated. Wait for your wax to haze and look down the side and you will probably see wax on most of the spots you thought you missed.
        Also like Murr stated 2 thin coats are always suggested for even coverage.

          Thanks hemi. I'm warming up the garage right now to apply a coat of NXT. BTW. That's a heck of a shine on the tailgate of your truck. At first glance I thought it was a painted mural till I looked closer.

                I just waxed my '13 Corvette for the 3rd time since getting it in March. And washed it for the first time, as Duster + Detail spray have kept it looking like new which isn't difficult as it is. It is Torch Red, my '06 was black, so seeing wax was much easier on that one. I did find that finding the right angle will show if I missed a spot--inside my garage so the sun didn't make it harder. Kind of looking down at various angles. If in doubt, I would simply go over it. Gold Glass + Carnuba is my wax of choice, and I wet the applicator first, wring it out so only damp, and use a light coat. Shine on the tires, leather wipes on the interior--Meguiars both, of course, and the car looks great. I have never been a proponent of waxing twice on a car. I prefer to do it every two months in the nice weather and use detailer in between. I did use NXT spray wax on the black Vette in between full waxing sometimes, as it sat out more than this one ever will. But then, I am anal about making sure the one coat, although thin, is fully applied. White can be a challenge no matter what you do.
