  • Is there more bite from Even Coat Microfiber Applicator Pads vs. foam pad?

    Hi Everybody,

I have a machine polisher but sometimes just like to do a quick job by hand with cleaner wax, color-X, and soon the new black and white waxes. I'm wondering if using the even coat microfiber applicator pads would give the cleaner waxes more "bite" by hand using these vs the yellow foam pads. I know its a dumb question but it states on the box the microfiber applicators comes in "Gentler then a foam pad" yet intuitively it seems like the surface of the microfiber cloth would have more bite then foam. Just like to hear this from the experts.

    Thanks,
    Matt

If you put a microfiber under moderate down pressure it will give you more bite than a foam.

MF has a decent amount of extra cut. It is hard to create a comparison without showing. But on a 1-10 scale I would say yellow pads are like a 6 in the cut, and MF "cut" pads are like 8. On my car I often use strong cut products along with MF pads to get the cut I need. The products you list do not have a huge amount of cut. I would suggest UC (ultimate compound) or M105/M101 before jumping to different pads...backing plate...

When applying wax properly, which means not using much pressure at all, the difference between the Even Coat microfiber applicator and our X4000 foam hand pads is almost nonexistent. But if you're going to be doing defect correction by hand, using something like Ultimate Compound, you will gain some cut with the microfiber because you will now be putting some fairly significant energy into the application. The microfiber will help "bite" a bit more in that case.

Remember, the material in and of itself is only part of the aggressiveness equation. When looking at our DMC5/DMF5 microfiber discs compared to our W820x foam pads (and of course we're now talking about machine application here) it is generally accepted that the DMC5 cutting disc offers more cut than even the W8207 foam cutting pad. On the flip side, the DMF5 microfiber finishing disc can, with a product like D301 Finishing Wax, leave an extremely nice finish. But that's when used with a DA at speed 3 with that product - which is exactly how we recommend using it because that is exactly how it was developed. And we'll also tell you that, under those exact same conditions, the 6" microfiber finishing disc will be even less aggressive. But all that turns upside down when guys run the DMC6 microfiber cutting disc on a tool like the new Rupes Bigfoot 21 and our M101 - that combination, which includes what is our most gentle microfiber disc, will cut like a mad man with a razor sharp machete.
