  • Question re: Single Stage Paint Job & Waxing

Car was painted end of May ...

It's been waxed a couple times since then, the first.. after the body shop said it was OK.

I have been using Maguiar's Deep Crystal Carnauba. I have noticed that a little paint, not much, transfers to my MF towel.
Every once in a while .. actually more than not, it seems this wax kind of drags when removing it.
I have tried to keep it thin when applying.

I'm wondering if this is normal? I have a feeling it is, being that there is no CC.

Do you think I should switch wax?

Thanks, I find this forum very helpful.

I'm trying like heck* (Family friendly language) to keep this paint from fading and looking bad (Family friendly language) in less than a year.

    Thanks again..Steve

Re: Question re: Single Stage Paint Job & Waxing

Have you dont any claying, cleaning, polishing steps either?

Anything will drag if the surface isnt the best possible.

That said it is a more entry level wax, going to the Gold Class+ would be a bit of a step up.

No I haven't clayed being it's a new paint job.. and it does feel very smooth. It's cleaned a couple times a week with QD of course.

I'm afraid to polish, I know they spray these SS jobs thin... won't I lose paint?

I'll got to NXT2 or UW.. whatever is the best for this car.

      thanks.

Well, not sure what your painter did. Paint is always thin, SS should be thicker than others really.

Using a mild cleaner/polish product like Ult. Polish or #80 would be great to clean/polish the paint at once. Assuming you dont apply them with sandpaper, you wont remove more than a few molecules of paint.

It doesn't matter how old a finish is. It only matters what it's been exposed to.

A lot of cars come back from paint shops needing to be clayed very badly, most commonly due to overspray in the shop.

This might be an indication that it has overspray and should be clayed.

It isn't normal to spray SS thin. It's supposed to be sprayed to manufacturer's spec.

If anything, it's probably more common to spray SS finishes thick. At least that's mostly what I've seen. But there's no way of absolutely knowing what's on a given car without before and after measurements.

If they sprayed it to spec, there'd be enough depth for initial compounding and polishing.

Since you're in SoCal, I'd highly recommend signing up for a TNOG or Saturday class so the team can have a look and help you dial in a process.

Brought it by the body shop and there is no over spary..I also got rid of the Crystal Wax and got NXT 2.0. It's like night and day. Goes on easier and comes off smooth and makes this SS job look good..

The paint feels like glass, if it feels like glass, is claying necessary?
