  • Proper Method of Working M105 and M205 by hand?

    Hey Meguiar's fans,

What is the proper and most effective method of using M105 and M205 by hand? Should I work them both the same or differently?

My thinking is to work M105 vigorously in a back and forth motion overlapping by 50%, with a final, lighter working in a circular motion, and to work 205 perpendicular to the direction I worked M105, also finishing with a circular motion. Also, when singling out scratches, should they be worked parallel or perpendicular? How about pads? If I use, say, a terry pad with M105 and it finishes out well, should I use a foam pad for M205? Any pointers or tips are appreciated.

I recently acquired a BLACK 1998 Mercedes C230, one owner, always garaged, serviced at the dealer, etc., with only 74,000 miles, after scouring the market for weeks. The car is in great shape, but there are swirls and minor clear coat scratches, mostly only visible when in the sun.

I first tried the newer rubbing/polishing compound duo by Meguiar's and those products did improve the paint, mostly in regards to clarity and depth of color, but didn't really make a dent in the minor paint defects. I now have M105, M205 and M7 sitting in the garage awaiting use, as well as the consumer clay bar package.

I'm glad to have this forum. It's given me so much knowledge I didn't have before, such as the fact some cars (Mercedes, in my case) have incredibly hard paint.

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online, Brian.

Mercedes is well known for hard paints. You're gonna step up to more aggressive compound M105 for your defect removal. I'd still use circular motion with 50% overlapping for uniform coverage (no straight lines). Just concentrate on small section at the time and use moderate pressure.

You can go with terry cotton applicator for M105 and then soft foam applicator for M205. M07 Show Car Glaze may be an optional step if needed after Ultra Finishing Polish.

DA polisher would make a huge difference in your case talking about effectiveness, results reached and time spent.

Thanks for the response. I really need to invest in a DA, but it won't be soon.

I'm surprised at how heavy duty M105 is - it's no joke. Have any idea what I could be doing wrong by hand that causes holograms?

        From Meguiar's Knowledge Center:

        Buffer Swirls or Holograms
Buffer swirl, also referred to as holograms, are circular scratches grooved into the finish through either the improper use of a rotary buffer, or using the wrong pads and chemicals with the rotary buffer. Buffer swirls can either be very deep or very shallow, depending on how forcefully the were created and depending on the products and type of pad used while buffing.
        • Shallow swirls can be removed using light swirl removers such as ScratchX 2.0 or #9 Swirl Remover 2.0 Both of these products will safely remove light swirls and scratches from your finish without using harsh chemicals or sharp abrasives.
        • Light to moderate swirls can be removed using the Meguiar’s Dual-Action polisher, the appropriate Meguiar’s foam buffing pad and the correct paint cleaner or cleaner/polish.
        • Moderate to deep swirls will require a thorough machine cleaning using a rotary buffer, the appropriate Meguiar’s foam buffing pad and the correct paint cleaner and/or cleaner polish.
If you worked by hand you most likely experienced haze or micro-marring. There's nothing to worry about as aggressive compounds may leave this side defects after application. M205 Ultra Finishing Polish should take care of it.

Try to perform a test spot with M105 using both applicators: terry cotton and soft foam to see which works better on your paint type.

You are 100% right - M105 offers high level of correction.

What are you applying the #105 with?

I used a new terry applicator pad by hand. Now I'm thinking I should have used lighter pressure. I've only experimented so far and on my trunk lid. Once I backed the car into the sun, M105 appears to have mostly leveled the scratches and swirls leaving more numerous, but much more shallow swirls. This final result was after an application of M205 as well. I used terry with the M205 too. Should have used foam, I think. I think I'll try finishing out what's already done with M205 using foam this time and try an entirely new section on the car with a microfiber towel to apply M105 followed by foam with M205.

All in all, once I find my way and if I do only one or a couple panels per evening I think I could end up with great results.

I would want foam for both products.....

Or if anything, terry/#105, then foam/#105. Then #205/foam if needed.

All foam it is, then, Mr. 14K posts. I'm all for letting the product do the work and not inflicting scratches with terry or microfiber. I'll get around to it soon and report back with my results.

Yeah.. might take different combos, different pressures... might take a little playing around.
