  • I may have damaged my finish with UC

Last night I tried to fix a nick from a rock in my roof. My car is only 4 months old and I didn't think I could damage my finish by hand. After working UC a couple of times with a micro fiber cloth and a foam applicator I removed most of the nick but my finish had a dime size section that looked dull compared to the rest of the paint.

Tonight I tried to fix the blemish with scratch X then Swirl X figuring I caused hazing with UC and I just needed to polish it out. Unfortunately I only made it worse/larger.

Is this hazing or something more serious? I.e. is this something I should be able to fix by hand and just didn't keep at it long enough or do I need to have a professional look at it? I have used UC on other sections of the car with no blemishes. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

No, you haven't ruined your finish. What you need is a finishing polish such as Megs 205

If you want to stick with readily available products look for ScratchX or SwirlX at Walmart and you should be able to finish that off nicely.

I used scratch x and swirl x to get to the second pic. It sounds like i should get some 205 and go at it again. It seems like i just didn't put enough elbow grease into a finishing product after the UC.

Exactly ^ Plus, you may have put just a little "to much" elbow grease into your previous method

Try ScratchX or SwirlX again with a foam pad and only moderate pressure but very vigorous polishing action. I've found ScratchX to be as aggressive as and work nearly as effectively as #205. You might need two or three passes depending on the hardness of the paint.

Thanks for the advise everyone. I have an order of car care goodies on the way from the holidays so as soon as that comes in I'll try again with a foam polishing pad.
