  • It is possible to remove swirls by hand

Even though I have a G110V2 I decided to go outside the other day and give myself a test. I wanted to see if I could make a test spot swirl free with Swirlx and a foam applicator. I think you will be pleased with the results.

This first photo shows the severity of the swirls I was working with. They were quite mild and felt that Swirlx would get the job done easily.

I decided to go with a test spot as aforementioned. I made it a little smaller than 1' X 1'; about 8" X 8". I have found that 1' X 1' can be a little too large of an area to achieve the level of correctness that I want. I am always left trying to pull out slight swirls for quite a while in a 1' X 1' but removed them with ease in this smaller area.

I proceeded to work the area with Swirlx and a Hi-Tech Foam Applicator. I did 3 applications of Swirlx working with some passion and on the fourth application I decided to use only light pressure and truly bring the gloss up. Each application was worked for about 1 minute and then wiped off with a Supreme Shine Microfiber.

Remember to use the length of your fingers or even your palm when eliminating swirls. I have found that fingertips prove useful only when trying to eliminate deep scratches in isolated regions. Otherwise, I can not get even coverage when working with my fingertips and the swirls become rather challenging to remove equally from the region.

This photo is after Swirlx had been applied in the manner described above and after a thin application (not removal) of Gold Class Carnauba Plus Paste wax.

Finally, we have the after photo of the swirl free, high-gloss region. Looks pretty good to me!

The slight marks around the sun are not swirls, they are wax residue that I did not fully remove. I wiped off the wax a tick to early (my eyes betrayed me in the swipe test) and had slight residue I had to wipe off later because I didn't want to continue wiping the panel and risk scratching.

Yet another win for Swirlx and the SMAT products!

Woops, sorry guys. I realized that this set was from March, hardly "the other day." You can see the snow in the reflection! I did this on a different spot on my car last week bt didn't take pictures for that one.

The process was exactly the same though so no worries!

Great write up, with some fantastic tips - especially about the proper way to hold the applicator when working by hand so as to avoid having the fingertips leave marks!

We do a similar demo at every Saturday Class using Ultimate Compound and we get great results every time. You certainly can remove swirls by hand, but of course the level of success will depend on how severe the defects, how hard the paint, and how vigorously and consistently you can work the product over the entire vehicle.

I have rubbed out all the motorcycles I have done by hand with SwirlX and Ultimate Compound.

Harley paint is on the soft side so they usually come out swirl free and glossy.

3 or so years ago, I did the Wife's Sebring by hand with scratch-x. Long process but well worth it.

          Great write up. Excellent results.

It's really quite funny and coincidental how one day, I have a problem with Swirl X, and when I come back, someone posts a bit on how to do it properly by hand. I must say, there is a big difference. I only noticed a light difference in swirl reduction in my car.

It all depends on the paint, applicator, amount of product, temperature, etc. There are a tremendous amount of variables involved. Perhaps the paint on a Jaguar is harder than paint on a MINI and thats why the difference was not as dramatic.
