  • ScratchX2.0 Q

I had been going through touchless washings all winter, so now that it is nice out i gave the Jeep a proper washing.

After claying i wanted to just remove anything else that was embedded in the paint, so i figured a good plan of attack was to go over the Jeep by hand with ScratchX V2.

I was under the assumption that this didnt contain diminishing abrasives, so i pressed harder initially and let up alittle as it got worked in.

Anyways, my own fault for being lazy and leaving the pc in the house, but i noticed in the sunlight there is scratching from the scratchX.

I used one of those german white/red applicators.

Anyways, im not here to , i have a ton of things i could have done (more correctly), and i can fix it up easy enough, but does ScratchX require friction to break down the abrasives? I thought it was along the lines as 105/205 UC ect...

Would anyone recomend i go over the Jeep again with a polishing pad( via da) and scratchX? I am aware of swirlX but i dont want anyting that can hide so to speak.

I would suggest going back over a test spot with your polishing pad and scratch x. Work a 12x12 area, then take your car into the sun and see if it looks the way you want it. If by chance there is still some micromarring (the scratching you said you see), then you may need to step down to Swirl X.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

Good recommendation. ScratchX 2.0 is closer to being a compound than a polish, having a cut level just less aggressive than Ultimate Compund, and as such the usual method of application would be to follow up a compound with a polish. SwirlX is a polish/cleaner that could clean up very nicely following an application of ScratchX 2.0.

Let us know how it goes.

        Re: ScratchX2.0 Q

Scratchx 2.0 (if this is the V2 you speak of) does not contain diminishing abrasives but Super Micro-Abrasives. This is the latest technology from Meguiars and the abrasives are micro-scopic, uniform and do not breal down under pressure allowing for different working times depending on the level of cut needed.

You say that the Scratchx 2.0 caused scratches, and I thought this two the first time until I relaized it was the terry cloth applicator causing my hazing, not the product. I have only heard of some micro-marring occurring from Ultimate Compound and I have only heard this happen to soft paints. I do not know how hard the paint on a Jeep is and it could vary between models and years. What kind of applicator were you using?

Secondly, it is very difficult to remove all the swirls from a car in a single day and many people, including me, recommend a panel day for excellent resuts. It is possible that you are not removing the initial scratches and upon wipe-off believe that the scratches you see are caused by the product when they are really the same scratches. It can take several applications, 4-5 sometimes, in order to adequately remove swirls and scratches. How many applications did you use on each worked-in section?

Obviously, using a DA is going to greatly increase the total cut of the product and allow easier removal of the defects. Using a polishing pad with Scratchx 2.0 could be a killer combo on some paints and remove every defect in a single pass. If doing an entire vehicle though, I recommend picking up some Swirlx and Ultimate Compound as they are much more economical for this purpose. Remember that you only need to work the abrasives long enough for the defects to be removed and because the abrasives do not break down, then your work times can vary depending on necessity.

All cleaner/polishes, pure polishes, glazes and sealants/waxes have the ability to hide imperfections and give the illusion of perfection to some degree. This is what dealerships are notorious for. However, I promise that Swirlx does not do nearly as much hiding as a product like NXT 2.0/M21 would do. The polishing oils in Swirlx will only hide small imperfections and you will be able to see if the defects were removed upon wipe off. If you'd like, pick up some isopropyl alcohol and dilute it I believe 4:1 (?), not exactly sure on the correct dilution, and wipe the area down with this. This solution will remove any polishing oils left by Swirlx and you will truly see the defects remaining. Ultimate Compound will remove many swirls on a single pass and since UC does not have any polishing oils, whatever is left to see is all that is left. You will not be dissapointed with UC on a polishing pad with your PC.

        Good luck!

          Re: ScratchX2.0 Q

Thanks for the replies. I used a red/white foam applicator from autogeek. In the spring I usually do a 2/3 step correction so the vehicle didn't have a lot of issues. I was just wondering if maybe the new version is maybe too aggressive.

Anyways thanks again. I do like the consistency of scratchx though I'm just not sure it is for large sections of a vehicle not by hand anyways.

I was using ScratchX 2.0 with microfiber application pad, it seems like it wasn't doing anything. The small scratches still there after going over it 5 times. I'm also running into a problem in my area, can't find regular foam applicator pads, only microfiber. It's tough trying to do it right. I'll spend another day working on it.
