  • Clay bar safe? visions of pumice

I'm new to the forums and learning about clay bar treatment. I have a 2007 grand cherokee with a red rock crystal paintjob that i've been washing with gold class and waxing with Nxt2.0 paste wax.

I've only recently learned about the clay bar. Can I go ahead and give this a try on my recently waxed vehicle? It definitely doesn't pass a smoothness or quiet test with my fingertips.

    wash, clay, wash, wax?

I'd appreciate any confidence building suggestion that I can't introduce new scratches or swirls through claying.

    Thanks for your time.

Go ahead and re wash the vechile, then go ahead and clay it, the Smooth Surface Clay kit comes with everything you will need. After that you will want to re apply two thin coats of NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0 or any other wax of your choice.

    Good luck and have fun.

Yeah, the clay will remove some or all of the previous wax.

      A better detail would be:
      1. Wash
      2. Clay - Smooth Surface Clay kit, buy and extra Quick Detailer bottle.
      3. ColorX
      4. Wax - Nxt 2.0

Thanks, I'm excited to give it a try after watching the Meguiars video on claying.

Any problem with running the clay across my vinyl/painted bumpers or even my headlamps?

You can clay everything, and glass.

But use an older peice for your wheels.

I like to cut the bar into 2 smaller pieces in case I drop one, and you can even work over carboard/paper, etc to keep clay off the ground.

DC1 followed by DC2 are good after claying also. Then TechWax2.

Make sure to use plenty of Quik Detailer as a clay lube - skimping there can lead to the clay dragging on the paint and leaving some residue behind. Just an annoyance, really, not anything damaging. Also, you don't need a lot of pressure on the clay, just guide it over the paint and move it fairly quickly too. If done right - enough QD lube and speed - you should have a tiny little bit of splashing/slinging/splatter of the QD. Just work small areas at a time and wipe the area dry before moving on to the next section. Clay like that and you shouldn't need to rewash before moving on to the paint cleaning step or even going straight to wax, depending on evaluation of the paint.

Like so many others, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to clay a vehicle, how quickly you can do it, and how much smoother the paint feels when you're done. Your wax will also be easier to apply and remove, and it will last longer as well.

It will be baby fanny smooth! You won't believe what you pull off of your car. Like Mike said, spray enough QD on as you clay, I spray the clay with a quick spritz as well.
