  • Learned that working by hand DOES work!

I had some water spots and light swirls on the roof of my car. One pass with the DA knocked the water spots and some of the swirls down. The about 3 hrs by hand and my roof is about 90% swirl free. Ty Scratch x

I will be getting around to the entire car eventually, I done a test spot on the fender first, my arm is numb and about to fall off, and I have 1/2 a fender and the roof done.

So, I just washed the fender and roof with liquid dish soap at about a 1:10 ratio, clayed over, and the change was visible and tangible I could feel how smooth the clear actually was! I am saving for a rotary, but I just bought some rims and tires...(Should have bought the rotary first). Not trying to get 100% correction, because it is my DD.

I do have a question about wax though.

I have a small tub of miguiars gold class wax, various ages.It isn't dried out, but it is 4-5yrs old. Should I just toss it, or is it still usable? Also, it smells wonderful...

No pics because My car is a gray with metal flake, and I couldn't get a picture to capture the before swirls..

I believe your wax would still works as long as it is store properly.

If you have paste wax, as long as it isn't really dry, hard as a rock and badly cracked it should still be just fine. Liquid waxes should be smooth and creamy in consistency and neither lumpy nor watery - either is an indication that the product has passed its useful life. Just shake it thoroughly before use.

You mention saving up for a rotary buffer - why not go with a D/A like the G110 instead? It's generally less expensive to acquire, easier and safer to use, and much easier to learn. In fact, you should have no problems learning how to use the G110 on your own car. Learning proper rotary use is another story altogether, and you most definitely do NOT want your pride and joy to be the test bed with that tool.

Wonder if a person could add a few drops of water to a tin of partially dried wax and recharge it?

Were you using ScratchX or ScratchX2.0?

I've only been able to get ScratchX,and it is milder, but with good technique and a bit of effort it does work efficiently,by hand.

The DA would be what you're after as Mike said.Personally,I like my rotary and really love getting the chance to do work with it,but you have to be prepared to practice on old hoods to gain experience. If I didn't have to do any work with removing sanding marks,I would have gone for a DA.

Re: Learned that working by hand DOES work!

It was just the regular scratchx. I have a cheap DA, and a orbital buffer, I have an extra hood and bumper to practice on if I ever get a rotary. I was gonna just go to the junk yard about a mile from my house and ask the owner is he has any old hoods I could practice on as well. That way I would know how to properly use the rotary, before actually working on my beauty.

Is it bad that I wish I wasn't going on vacation this weekend, so I could clay my entire car, hand buff and rewax, polish, and put my new rims on?

Also, Everytime I walk by a car now...I have this obsession of checking the paint...*sigh* I have detailers ADD..

The old scratchX(called 'new and improved')can be used with your DA.

Even though you say a cheap DA...as long as it does the job.
That's a perfect solution for you if you decide to buy a rotary...get the old hoods from the scrapyard.

That would only work if the wax was a water soluble product, which it isn't. If it were, it would just wash off in the rain!
