  • Light scratches

Well I have a red 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT coupe. The paint is in pretty good shape but it could be better. I have no power tools and I detail it all by hand. I get it looking real good but then when I take it under lights at like a gas station it has tons of light scratches if you look at different angles. How can I take these out by hand? I do not have the money for a big time machine but I have looked into a 6" orbital Palm buffer/Polisher but I was thinking that my do more harm then good. So what should I do?

    1. Wash - Gold Class soap, 2 buckets, quality towels, etc.

    2. Clay - Smooth Surface clay kit

    3. Clean - You will need to try SwirlX on a test spot. If it is not enough, you will want to try Ultimate Compound. UC is as strong as you can get by hand if used right. You might have to follow up the UC with SwirlX.

    4. Wax - 2 thin coats of Nxt 2.0 are good.

I wouldnt waste your money on that, put it towards a D.A

Those do not have enough power to remove swirls and scratches. They are good for spreading waxes but thats about it.

Ok thanks. I have one of those Mothers Power balls for paint but I am scared to use it because I think it puts swirls in the paint. They say it won't but I am not sure. Ill stick to working by hand until a get a DA of some sort I guess.

What are some really cheap ones that work well?

Your going to need some power to remove the paint that is required to "remove" the swirls.
            Check you local "tool shack"
Look for a cheap rotary, there like $30 bucks.
Now a rotary takes time to learn but it's not hard to learn how to use it.
If you decide to get a rotary, there are a lot of videos here to show you what to do.
I learned how to use a rotary when I was 13, if a teen can learn it you can to.

I'm only 17 so I guess I could learn too. I am just scared of using a rotary and burning threw the paint. I have a gift card to Lowes I could get one from there and practice on the hood off my old car that I no longer have. They have a rotary for 30$.

You can try something more aggressive by hand like Ultimate Compound or #105. The Ultimate Compound is relatively easy to find, they may even have it at Walmart. I know that Meijer's has it.

I would not take a rotary buffer to your GP until you've had some experience on someone else's beater or maybe a practice hood.

YEPP Thats my plan. I have a stock hood off my old car in my back yard that I will practice on till I get good at it.

I found a cheap 30 dollar one at Lowes tonight so I might buy that tomorrow because I have a gift card for there.
