  • good combination of products/procedures?!?

Hey everybody, new forum member here, just wanted to run down my list of "spring cleaning" items that I did to my car last weekend to see what people thought. I know a lot of it comes down to personal preference based on experience, but I'm just trying to make sure I'm not doing anything counterproductive or redundant. First some quick background information, it's a black 2002 Honda Civic that gets driven primarily on the weekends, and sits outside all the time. The paint is in pretty good condition as the car gets washed regularly spring through fall and waxed 3-4 times a year. However there were a fair amount of fine scratches, swirls and some holograming that I've been starting to notice recently, so I figured it was time for a little more action than just the usual wash and wax. Here's what I did, all by hand of course:

    1. Washed with Meguiar's car wash (pink bottle), then washed again the next day with Dawn. (1st time I've ever used dish soap to was a car in my life!)
    2. Clayed the car using smooth surface clay bar kit.
    3. Applied #9 Swirl Remover 2.0, tried to use a thin coat and work it in as much as possible, having my lovely assistant (i.e. girlfriend!) come right behind me removing it almost immediately.
    4. Applied thin coat of Gold Class liquid wax, removed after ~20 minutes.

I'm pretty satisfied with the results, or at least from what I can see so far, as it was dark when we finished and we haven't seen much of the sun here all week since. I know how the bright sunlight tends to reveal those defects. The paint definitely looked darker, deeper, more clear than before. I am going to try to follow up this weekend with another thin coat of the Gold Class, I'll take some pics and see if I can't post 'em up(probably not enough posts to do that yet!). Feel free to let me know what you think...thanks.

      1. Wash - And it can be the last time using dish soap....

      2. Clay - good

      3. Clean/Polish - Good. Though, #9 is a mild product. You may get better results next time with something like SwirlX, or even a stonger cleaner if needed.

      4. Wax - Good, 2 thin coats are best.

      5. Maintain - After future washes, you will want to use either Ultimate Quick Wax or Ultimate Quick Detailer to bring back the fresh look. UQW would put some wax back as well.

That's a pretty good combo by hand; M09 is on the very very light side of light cleaning especially when applied by hand compared to some of our other products.

If you decide you want more swirl removal then try either SwirlX or Ultimate Compound.

Have you tried the new Ultimate Detailer or Ultimate Quik Wax yet? You might find your really like one of these product or both of them on this car.

As for pictures, until you get over a certain number of posts your posts with pictures will go into the moderation queue but our Mods and myself are pretty good about checking the pending queue often and pushing through the legitimate posts and dealing with any Spam posts that get caught.

Yeah, I kinda gathered that the M09 must be on the light side, since it didn't even have a little "agressiveness meter" on the front of the bottle like the others, lol. I just bought 2 bottles of regular 'ol QD, so I'll just try to get by with that for now I guess. Is the UQD really that much better?
As for pics, so I could just try it and see what happens for now until I get over a set # of posts? I did take few pics after I got done that night, I'll try to put up 1 or 2 of those for now, until I get chance to take some more...

Definately put your pics up.. Mike'll get them approved.

As far the QD, you wil still want it for claying, and possibly removing bird ****, etc.

But the Ultimate products are great to have around, the UQW is great for after washes, and the UQD is also good for removing dirt, bird ****, and frankly I use it around the house to dust stuff and leave a shine.

Ok, I'll give the pics a try...considering they're night shots (no tripod) and they're from photobucket, the quality isn't the best, but here's
a few shots from the night we did the cleaning:

Gotta rub a little harder to get the Subway graffiti off the paint.

                Nice job...

Looks good so far.. of course the sunlight will show you the defects you are still working on.

And some fun exhaust tips to polish up.

Ok, I know it's taken me a while, but here's some follow up "after" pictures...these are from last weekend after the 2nd coat of Gold Class:

still more work to do?!? looks like some water spots?

The pics make it look somewhat murky, I guess it's just the graininess of the pics, it looks pretty clear in person. Here's a few more just for fun:
Will it ever stop raining here?!?

I really like this pic, would like it even more if I could just remember to take the little mini-tripod with me next time!!

Ok, that's all for now, thanks for looking and I appreciate any and all comments, suggestions, etc...

lol...yeah, I WISH it was a Type-R, we never got those here in the states...just an Si (160hp instead of 200!). Yeah, the blue reflections look really good, it doesn't hurt that Honda's Nighthawk Black color has a lot of blue metallic in it, either.
