  • Dark Patches

Hi Everyone, I am still trying to improve on my technique but there are times when I got "darker" patches after waxing.
The bonnet is the area that is more visible as it is more easier to be seen by the eye. It is also more visible in shaded area than under the sun.
What could be the possible causes?
    Thanks for the input.

What do you mean by the bonnet? How exactly did you prep the surface before apply wax? Do you have any pictures of this?

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

Yes . I prep the surface.
My weekly routine would be :
      Wash - NXT shampoo
      Claybar
      ColorX
      No21v2 or GC.

      or

      Wash - NXT shampoo
      Claybar
      ScratchX
      DC2 or ColorX
      No21v2 or GC.

I could not see the "darker" patches on the door panel but only on bonnet. Maybe it is due to angle that the light is shining on flat surface.
I tried taking pictures of it but could not pick it up on my camera.

By "bonnet" he means hood and I second the prep question...was the car thoroughly decontaminated (clayed) prior to wax application? Did you use a paint cleanser or cleaner wax (like A12 or PRC) first?

As mentioned to Andrew, I clayed regularly.
The paint would be clean by either ColorX or ScratchX.
These dark patches could appear when I use M21 or GC. So I do not think product is the problem.
At times, there are no "dark" patches.
I would think is my technique that needs improving.

The possible causes that I could think of is thick application or I insufficent curing time. But I do a swipe test before buffing.
This dark patches really left me

            Re: Dark Patches

If you are claying regularly and the dark patches are not present every time. I would hazard a guess and say the dark patches is were you have applied the product to heavy. Thin even coats is better. Next time you wax the vehicle concentrate on applying the wax in a consistently thin, even coat. See if this takes care of the dark patches.

I've seen that on my hood too. Will watch to make sure I spread the wax more evenly next time and see if that is the issue.

I dont think the product is the problem. I had this problem before. 1. The first time using M16 and second the first time using NXT 2.0 paste. It was my technique. What I found I did wrong was

                1. 'thin' it should be evenly thin. The patches was on the a lil thick side. Especially the first place that I applied after having a twist of wax

                2. It did not really dry of because of the overload of wax that I didn't spread evenly.

Anyway you can use a 'lot' of QD to get it off. I used Last Touch, after some repeating mist and wipe . . . ...

                Hope this helps.

hi michaels, thank you for the advise. Next time round I will try to wax it thin. but it seem abit difficult. When I apply thinly, at times it seems that there isn't any wax on. So i simply go over the surface again to make sure. Anyway, I will try it this coming weekend.

I think it could really mean that I apply "too" thick or unevenly "thin".
Guess my technique still needs more brushing up.

                        Re: Dark Patches

I hope I am helping but try this...prime your pad b4 you start waxing...make an x across the pad ( I usually rub it into the pad somehow to dampen the pad, then start doing small sections with just a small amount of wax (2x2,3x3 ect...dab it around the whole panel b4 spreading to make sure you have enough then start spreading where you started dabbing and wax as normal and remember to overlap your passes by about 50% and it usually helps while it`s still plyable to work it into the panel twice for better and more even coverage...make sure your swipe test is where you finished waxing or at least do 2-3 or more swipe tests per panel as some may take longer to dry for varying reasons...once again I hope this helps and I`m so happy to be a new member of the MOL family!
