  • Need advice on swirl removal by hand

I was washing the car the other day and noticed some swirls had appeared on one of the panels. I had both #9 and Scratch X 1.0 which I tired several times unsuccessfully by hand. Unfortunately I couldn't get a picture of the swirls as they were difficult enough to see, let alone photograph.

From reading the forums M105 or Ultimate Compound seem to be recommended for tackling tougher swirls, but they are not available in Australia yet. The products I have to chose from are:

    #85
    #80
    #2
    #1
    Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner
    Color X
    Deep Crystal Polish

What would recommended for working by hand?

for removing swirls by hand, your going to get best results using a SMAT product such as SwirlX or ScratchX 2.0

I wouldnt use #85 by hand, its a heavy duty compound and will scour your finish if used incorrectly.

DC2 is a pure polish and pure polishes do not remove paint, so you wont remove swirls.

I would try using M80 or Color X to remove the swirls, but do not expect to get full removal with ColorX.

Is ScratchX available there? Even the old one?

I've tried several applications of the old Scratch X formula with no success. Scratch X 2.0 isn't going to be available in Australia until later this year.

I'm considering purchasing a G220, but don't know whether I'll get the use out of it to justify the purchase cost, plus my partner is already dropping hints that I spend more money and time on the car than on her.

Don't want to cause any riff with the better half, but, if you got a G220 you could cut our detailing time in half. It is worth the cost, even for the hobbyist. G220, M83, M80, and M21 you are set my friend. 83 and 80 are old stand-bys and always work, however there are a lot of new products also.

I am tempted to get a G220 as it took forever to do the car the other day. I have a large SUV and just to wash, dry, Scratch X, #9, #7 and NXT 2.0 took 6 hours (I think it took 45 mins just to apply the NXT to everywhere). Plus I want to do my better half's car to pacify her (so will need to do two cars each session) and that will need a lot of paint correction as her philosophy is why wash a car when it will only get dirty.

Unfortunately M83 doesn't appear to be listed on the Meguiars AU website. Does Meguiars Direct ship internationally?

You did a fantastic job! I have the same problem with swirls.Yeah, you're right about dc2.I'm trying to get a hold of some swirlx.it's really tough to get M's products in Italy.I know how your arms feel.but it's worth it!

              Ciao for now,Eddie.

Yes, its going to be a litle more aggressive though.

You could also try getting your hands on some M80 Speed Glaze.

Hi Tuck,I see you got my message about scratchx and swirlx.when i used to live in the uK,shops would always order for you.In Italy, unfortunatley,it's different. You ask in a shop that sells some meguiar's products,"can you order this for me?" The answer is always "No" .Why things are like that here,I don't know?

Anyway,i seen the job you done and thought the finish was supreme. That pic under the flourescent lights was the best clarity i've seen!

For what it costs,I'll give the scratchx a go.I'll not be able to get round to doing it for 3 weeks or so,but i'll keep you posted on how i get on and upload some pics after.
                      Thanks Eddie.
