DIY. Grit Guard, weekend project.

My DIY. Grit Guard alternative, this is my weekend project.

1. Tools:
-Hacksaw
-Wirecutter
-Iron file
-Ruler
-Pocket knife
-Pen
-Tooth brush
-Drill (forgot to take a pic)
-Some cable ties (forgot to take a pic)
-Sand paper (forgot to take a pic)


2. Material
-Egg Create / Light Diffuser. I have this at my home.


-Plactic board, in this case I'm using cheap writing pads. I bought 2 of them each $1.4.


3 Process
-Cut Egg Crate to a round shape, so it will positioned approx. 2.5" from the bottom of the bucket.
-Cut plastic board as shown in the photo. Make some holes for the cable ties. This plastic board will be the stand for the Egg Create.


-Use tooth brush and sand paper or iron file to remove any plastic fragments.


-Plastic board assembly, using cable ties. More chambers to minimize water turbulence.


-Egg Crate assembled together with the plastic board part, using cable ties.


-Bottom view:

-Perfectly fit in my 5 gal. bucket:


-Fill with water, it does not float, stick at the bottom of the bucket:


-I made two of them, one for soap bucket and one for rinse bucket:


-Labour cost: 4 hours, Material cost: approx. 5 bucks

4. Conclusion:
-Cheap alternative Grit Guard.
-More chambers (6 instead of 4) to minimize water turbulance.
-I am happy with the result.

Wow thats a great idea. I use odd shaped buckets (42 lb. Cat litter buckets) that I've been trying to figure something out with. This is perfect! You can custom make any shape! Thanks a lot!

Yes, it require some patience, expecially shaping out the egg crate. But it really worth the result.

Not to mention hand cramps from cutting the thick egg crate material. LOL JK. It's not a Great idea, it's a 'Grate' Idea.!

I've seen a few DIY grit guards over the years and this is probably one of the best ones.

I made my own grit guard also. However all I did was find 2 buckets that will fit inside each other. Drilled a LOT of holes in the bottom of one bucket and then put them inside one another.

Great idea, but I'll file this under the category of "Worth the money to just buy one." Can't knock you for saving a few dollars and having an afternoon project though!

I must say, I definately agree with you, if you are living in the US. But remember, not all of us have such priviledge.

Those look like they should work every bit as well as the originals, if not better. The extra baffles should cut down on water movement even more as you hypothesized.
