  • Recommended Adhesive For Molding

Would anyone have a recommended adhesive to use on a friends vehicle roof rain gutter (?) molding? It has begun to come loose and flap in the wind when driving and we would like to re-attach before it comes complete off.

    Thanks in advance.

Does the piece of molding need to attach to plastic or paint?

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.

Good question Andrew. It attaches to paint. HOWEVER, the molding is a two part piece it appears (after looking at it again). the "hard" rubber part is actually seperating from the adhesive strip. In other words, the existing adhesive strip is fine, but the rubber strip is lifting from the adhesive part. Does that make sense?

I think I get what you are saying. There was an adhesive piece of tape of some sort (double sided of course) and the tape is still on the car, but the part that connects to the trim has come undone.

Personally, I would suggest being very careful and using super glue. The stuff is impossible to get undone once dried, and it should adhere well to both surfaces.

I would suggest removing the molding and remove the tape from both the roof and the molding. Clean the area on the roof with some paint solvent. Use 3M double sided tape (no other tape than 3M!) and just reinstall.

            Don...

A few years ago I owned a '99 Camry, and the windshield cowl was slightly warped, causing a gap about 6 inches wide where it wasn't tight against the windshield. The only product that truly worked was 3M's Super Weatherstrip & Gasket Adhesive. Granted, I only had the car about a month after I fixed that part, but it was still holding strong when I traded her in. Be sure to put some weight on the bond as it sets.

SUPERB information everyone. I can't thank you all enough. I will recommend the 3M attack to the owner and help him out if I can. It's my neighbor Steve (home from Afganistan and owns the F250 I detailed for his return) and the faulty strip is on his wife's suburban that they want me to detail.

Thanks again. I certainly appreciate it.

I use that stuff all the time, thick and tacky. I recently used it to run my wire for satalite radio in the door jamb of my buick. No issues on pinching or anything.
