Re: Scratched Glass Solution - Cerium Oxide

    Good to know
    I'll try that out
    I've got a little grinder
I wonder why the LC GPS kit has such a big polisher and not a small one

Just to hazzard a guess. With a large polisher it would be more difficult to do any actual damage to the windshield. Where as with a much smaller diameter you could concentrate the cutting force on such a small area that you might generate enough heat to cause a crack. Or an optical flaw.

Well you don't even know the half of it!
Next time I see you, hopefully, I'll tell you what my superior future holds!

No optical change what so ever!
The Glazers I talked to said there would be, but as a Mike said "You'd have to remove allot of glass to do that" and I can't see any optical change.

Also I only used the side of the pad for the door, it's curved and I couldn't keep the pad flat anyways.
So I expected some optical change but there isn't any.
I plan on doing the entire windshield so we'll see.

So I'd say get the GPS and try it out, but make sure you don't let it dry out, spray with DW water. You will see a difference after an hour or so!
That was excellent work on your glass mario! Polishing glass is an art in itself.you obviously did everything the correct way and taught yourself well. Great write up and photos. I have light scuffed wiper marks on my civics windshield(15 years old). When i get some time(ha-ha),i will research this as you have done. Thankyou!

I think using a larger polisher could be why it took much longer to polish out the scratches. I have been using a Dremel Moto-Tool with a hard felt bob in 3/16 inch diameter for windshield wiper trails with great success. They are spinning at 18,000rpm. And for larger areas I use a hard felt bob in a drill motor at 6400rpm. It is 2" diameter. Both of those bobs produce a more concentrated pressure. And I have never had a heating problem either one.
And I don't think that I have ever spent more than 30 minutes on a scratch.

Go the route OldModMan stated in his reply
This is the way I'm going to do my next scratches.
Smaller bobs will cut down on the time, so stated by OMM.

[QUOTE=Maserati Mario;304938]How to remove light scratches from glass - homemade system

I finished up my tests on removing scratches from glass yesterday

It takes a lot of learning, skill and hard work to do that kind of work.To achieve that finish with one attempt is an incredible achievment..

Re: Scratched Glass Solution - Cerium Oxide

No problems! I had a look at that thread with the Fuddy Duddy last night, but I see the thread is closed.Excellent work! A joy to see something like that made over. Anyway could you ask one of the team to do an article (possibly in the break room) describing a little about the history of the plane.I'm not an expert on war planes, but I like to read a lot about history..That would be really nice and compliment the pics!

                  Thanks,Eddie.

Re: Scratched Glass Solution - Cerium Oxide

                    Here's a goog search

to much info for me to post.

My personal history with this plane started when Mr. Lyon flew it to Washington DC last year. My gf works for William Lyon and I've met him and his family. I'm more friends with his Chaffer (trying to get his job!). He's a great guy and we talk about cars allot. I've been waiting for this museum to open since I first heard about it last year. It was such an honor to work for Mr. Lyon and help restore this Icon off WWII.
Mr. Lyon is a tru American & an American Hero!

Thanks for the links. I had a good look thriugh including the 2 youtube clips.Great to hear the gunner talking about their narrow escape when they were trying to land. I also noticed this:

Flown to Hawaii for movie "Tora, Tora, Tora" Jan. 1969.

I'll need to dig out the movie and see it.

Nice to see that it is being maintained by it's owner and kept in it's homeland.

                      Greatpiece of history!
