Dr. Color Chip: Better then blobs and wet sanding!
Re: Dr. Color Chip: Better then blobs and wet sanding!
I was a little disappointed In it. Maybe I was expecting to much. I did a OK job of hiding the chips but I found that if you waited longer than 3 minutes you had to rub like hell to get the smear off and then you tend to pull the paint out of the chip. Maybe this was because I used rubbing alcohol as a paint prep to clean the was off. Also some of my chip were a little deep and were hard to fill in. Has anyone tried to fill the chip with a little body filler and painting over that.
Re: Dr. Color Chip: Better then blobs and wet sanding!
Sorry to hear that.
Maybe it was the ISA. As with any painting prodject, preping is the key.
I use DCC prep solution and had no problem with the paint staying in the chips.
I had to rub hard too, so I think that's the norm. on that.
I would do a few coats rather then use bondo/filler. but I'm sure you could
Re: Dr. Color Chip: Better then blobs and wet sanding!
Wish I read about the Dr Color chip before I sent my car to have 4 chips done on my hood. They handled the chips but advised they needed to clear coat the entire hood. I had to remove my hood graphics, and they did the clear coats. Unfortunately hey did not clean the adhesive under the graphics well enough, so the paint (water based) crinkled up & they had to resand. Now I am waiting for 3 more weeks To get the graphics back on & am out a couple of hundred bucks for the graphics as well as the re-clear coating. Also, I figured I'd have them do a polish to remove fine swirl marks, and apparently the polish was slung around so I have a whitish haze type glaze over portions of the car, including the new paint on the hood.
I am wondering how to remove the haze from the hood - I was told by the paint guy to use a rubbing compound, but when I attempted this ( I used McQuires polish rated at 4) my cloth had red paint on it. Now I figure I have to wait a few more weeks to try to get the haze marks off. I thought that a pre-wax cleaner might be best though. Any suggestions as to how to handle? The hood is smooth so I don't feel I would need clay.
Re: Dr. Color Chip: Better then blobs and wet sanding!
I have purchased Dr Color chip for both my 2005 Monte Carlo and 2013 Beetle TDI. The Beetle with 17k miles has just as much road rash as the Monte with 200k. The Beetle has delicate paint. If you look at it funny it will get swirls and light scratches. I have a brand new Meguiars DA, a clay bar, UC, Swirlx, UP and ULW. The UC is for the Monte not the delicate Beetle. I am not sure if I will even use the Swirlx on the Beetle since the UP may be aggressive enough. At what point/after which step should I use the Dr Color chip?
Re: Dr. Color Chip: Better then blobs and wet sanding!
I'd use it after polishing/before waxing.
After you paint it I'd wait a few day and polish over the DCC if your areas need it.
Just because as you wipe you might create micro scratches.
Also you can use it after you wax but you must clean out the wax from each chip so therefore I'd do it before I'd wax.

I'm glad to see an outside source recommending DCC. A buddy told me about it and showed me their videos. Looked like some tweeker invention. But I've only heard good things! I must try.
