Mirlon pad for wet sanding?

I just painted some wood black laquer no clear coat, can i use the grey mirlon 1500 pad before using meguiars compound on it?

Or do I need regular sandpaper, what grit? I have meguiars ultimate compound and also the mf system to finish it..

I want it to shine like a black piano finish...

I ask because I bought a set of mirlon grey pads that I never used

Oh and how long after painting should i wait before sanding?

Mirlon is intended for fine finish sanding. So, in theory, you should be able to use it to prep a surface prior to compounding.

I say in theory because there a far too many variables in paintwork to make absolute statements. The particular finish material, how it was applied, the substrate, the abrasives, the application tool for the abrasives, etc, etc, etc all come into play.

Bottom line is that it sounds reasonable, but you'll need to do some testing to dial in a process that will give the results you want.

Oh, and another thing, the finish quality is dependent on more than just the top coat and top coat finishing processes.

How the substrate was prepped, what sealers and primers were applied, and how they were processed are also important.


Oh, and another, other thing, Mirlon also comes in 2500. I'd definitely want to play with that too.
