  • sanded rock chip. resulted in dimple.

I filled in some rock chips with touch up paint.
elevated blobs of paint, then sanded down flat with 2000 grit.

after polishing the spot, i see a dimple around the rock chip spot. I made the clear coat uneven.
Looks like the area is a fraction of a millimeter lower than the rest of the paint.
you can see it under the right angle of light.

I'm thinking about sanding it with 2000 grit, and brushing on a layer of urethane clear paint on the dimple, then trying to sand the area flat.

what do you think? will it last? will it work?
or should i sand a larger area around the rock chip and try to feather it out ?

Sanding a bit larger area is probably the better option of the two, as long as you have the means to fully remove your sanding marks. It seems the larger an area you do, especially if this isn't something you do regularly, the greater the chance for the sanding to be uneven and the resulting work needed to remove all the marks potentially frustrating.

If you ever do this sort of touch up again you might want to mask off an area about 1" all around the touch up blob and then do the sanding with a small block behind the sandpaper. That will keep you from going any lower than you absolutely need or want to.
