  • Removed Orange Peel....

I had a fender from a 2010 Ford Mustang laying around that was bound to be repainted... so I decided to try wet-sanding in an attempt to remove orange peel.

It turned out pretty well considering the fact that I only used 2000 grit... But I used a Makita rotary w/ a SoftBuff 2.0 pad with Ultimate Compound at speed 4...

Not that I don't have a paint mircometer so I don't know how much clear coat I took off... I just wanted practice and to see if it could be done.

    Just thought I'd share...

It came out good. Orange peel gone.

How was your experience with Ultimate Compound and rotary buffer? They are not a perfect match but it looks like it worked in your case. Was it hard to remove the sanding marks?

In real life you need to leave about 1.3-1.5 mils of the clear coat (out of above 2.0 mils) for average car's lifetime. There's very little room left for any mistake and PTG is really needed.

Nice write up and great experience.

Great practice, and your results are very impressive! As Greg points out, a PTG is going to be critical if you're going to do this on a full car but it seems you're well aware of that already.

Your sanding marks look really nice and uniform though, which is critical for successful (not to mention easier) compounding.

Can be possible orange peel in factory paint or is it just a result from re-spray?

            Re: Removed Orange Peel....

After wet sanding you use an aggressive compound (mostly with a rotary buffer) to remove sanding marks. The next step is to clean up side effects of compounding, like swirls, haze, micro-marring. Swirl remover would be the product to go with. Then it's a gloss restoration process with paint polish and protection/ wax.

Ultra Cut Compound M105 and Ultra Finishing Polish M205 are two great products to use after wet sanding.

Orange peel is typically the result of improper painting technique, and is caused by the quick evaporation of paint thinner, incorrect spray gun setup (e.g., low air pressure or incorrect nozzle), spraying the paint at the wrong angle, or applying excessive paint.
